Sensorimotor network connectivity correlates with motor improvement after repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in patients with Parkinson's disease

Shumei Chi et al.

Summary: This study explores the connectivity changes in Parkinson's disease patients with different responses to rTMS and finds that degree centrality patterns in the left sensorimotor regions are primarily responsible for the differences between responsive and non-responsive individuals. Improvement in motor symptoms is substantially related to the baseline degree centrality in the left PreCG and the left PoCG. Lastly, connectivity increases in left PreCG and PoCG in patients with a better response to rTMS.

Cerebellar Microstructural Abnormalities in Parkinson's Disease: a Systematic Review of Diffusion Tensor Imaging Studies

Maryam Haghshomar et al.

Summary: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a valuable research tool for evaluating neural fibers in Parkinson's disease (PD) and can provide insights into the microstructural changes in white matter. This study utilized the PRISMA 2020 framework to identify relevant articles and selected 68 papers for synthesis. The results suggest that reductions in cerebellar white matter integrity, as measured by DTI, are associated with PD symptoms and stages. PD patients with postural instability and gait difficulty show different DTI changes in the cerebellum compared to those with tremor dominant PD. Freezing of gait is strongly related to cerebellar involvement depicted by DTI. Other symptoms such as cognitive decline, visual disturbances, and sleep disorders are not related to cerebellar microstructural changes on DTI, while impulsive-compulsive behavior can be linked to cerebellar white matter alteration. Furthermore, higher PD stages and longer disease duration are associated with cerebellum white matter alteration depicted by DTI.

Genetic Analysis of Patients With Early-Onset Parkinson's Disease in Eastern China

Ping Hua et al.

Summary: This study explores the mutation spectrum and clinical characteristics of early-onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD) in eastern China. The researchers detected several pathogenic gene mutations associated with Parkinson's disease and identified four novel mutations. These findings contribute to our understanding of the genetic features and pathophysiologic mechanisms of EOPD.

Age Cutoff for Early-Onset Parkinson's Disease: Recommendations from the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society Task Force on Early Onset Parkinson's Disease

Raja Mehanna et al.

Summary: Consensus on the nomenclature and age at onset cutoff for early-onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD) was reached after an extensive review of the literature and task force meetings. The majority of international genetic studies in PD use an age cutoff of younger than 50 years to define EOPD. It is recommended to consider the impact of age at menopause of 50 years when defining EOPD.

Summary: This study investigated the clinical differences between early-onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD) and mid-and-late-onset Parkinson's disease (MLOPD) in the Greek population. The results showed that EOPD and MLOPD have distinct clinical profiles regarding motor and non-motor symptoms, side of onset, and motor complications.

Resting-state brain network in Parkinson's disease with different degrees of depression

Qinru Liu et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the neural network mechanism of Parkinson's disease with different degrees of depression. The results showed that there are abnormal functional connectivity in multiple brain networks among different groups. The degree of decreased functional connectivity in the interior Salience Network is related to the severity of depression, which can be used as an imaging marker for judging the severity of depression.

Parallel and Serial Sensory Processing in Developing Primary Somatosensory and Motor Cortex

Lex J. Gomez et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the primary motor cortex (M1) can receive sensory input directly from the thalamus independent of the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) at early developmental stages. The processing of self-generated and other-generated movements varies between S1 and M1 before they establish the interactive relationship typical of adult functionality.

Networks Are Associated With Depression in Patients With Parkinson's Disease: A Resting-State Imaging Study

Haiyan Liao et al.

Summary: In this study, researchers investigated the differences in intra-network and inter-network brain connectivity in Parkinson's disease patients with and without depression. They found abnormal functional connectivity values within and between several large-scale networks in patients with Parkinson's disease and depression, suggesting that these network aberrations could serve as biomarkers for distinguishing between depressed and non-depressed Parkinson's disease patients.
