Physiology of Plant Responses to Water Stress and Related Genes: A Review

Jiaojiao Wu et al.

Summary: This review discusses the impact of drought and waterlogging on plants and their mechanisms. Both drought and waterlogging stress affect leaf morphology and photosynthesis, and plants enhance their resistance to these stresses by producing key enzymes. The closure of leaf stomata and the formation of aerenchymal in the root system are important mechanisms for plant adaptation to water stress.

Integration of the Physiology, Transcriptome and Proteome Reveals the Molecular Mechanism of Drought Tolerance in Cupressus gigantea

Pei Lei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response and mechanism of Cupressus gigantea to drought stress and post-drought recovery. The findings showed that drought stress inhibited photosynthesis but increased osmolyte contents, antioxidant enzyme activity, and non-enzymatic antioxidant contents in seedlings. Re-watering led to a recovery in photosynthetic parameters and osmolyte contents. Transcriptomic and proteomic profiling revealed that differentially expressed genes and proteins associated with photosynthesis were commonly reduced under drought stress. Notably, genes and proteins involved in reactive oxygen species scavenging showed an inverse pattern under desiccation.

Direct evidence of drought stress memory in mulberry from a physiological perspective: Antioxidative, osmotic and phytohormonal regulations

Li Liu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that early priming of mulberry saplings with drought stress can enhance their resistance to subsequent drought, leading to higher biomass accumulation and reduced oxidative damage. The phytohormones ABA and JA also play important roles in exerting drought imprints.

Plant survival under drought stress: Implications, adaptive responses, and integrated rhizosphere management strategy for stress mitigation

Rabisa Zia et al.

Summary: Drought poses a serious threat to global agriculture, particularly impacting soil biota and plants. Plant drought resistance is a complex quantitative trait controlled by multiple genes, with research indicating various strategies to cope with drought stress, yet the role of the rhizosphere remains largely overlooked. Therefore, an integrated rhizosphere management strategy may be an effective approach for mitigating drought stress.

Drought: Sensing, signalling, effects and tolerance in higher plants

Mohammad Mukarram et al.

Summary: Drought is a combination of multiple stressful conditions that disrupt osmotic and ionic balance in plants, leading to impacts on overall plant growth, development, and productivity. Plants have various defense mechanisms to mitigate the effects of drought, including stomatal adjustments, osmotic adjustments, antioxidant metabolism, and ion regulations, which can help alleviate the damage caused by water deficit.

Evaluation of morphological, physiological, and biochemical traits for assessing drought resistance in eleven tree species

Narayan Bhusal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the drought resistance of different tree species under varying levels of drought stress and identified key traits related to drought resistance, such as leaf water potential, photosynthetic rate, and carbon isotope discrimination. Plant drought resistance is influenced by a combination of morphological, physiological, and biochemical factors, with species-specific responses to drought stress observed. The findings highlight the importance of considering a range of characteristics when selecting species for afforestation programs in the face of increasing drought frequency and intensity.
