Contributions of competition on Larix kaempferi tree-ring growth were higher than long-term climate in China

Chunyan Wu et al.

Summary: Forest tree growth is crucial for carbon cycle and sequestration in forest ecosystems, but the factors influencing tree growth are diverse. This study examined the impact of regional competition on tree growth in Chinese plantations through sampling tree-ring width of Larix kaempferi and competition data. The results revealed that competition consistently had a stronger effect on tree growth compared to climate or tree size. Over time, the negative effects of neighborhood competition gradually intensified, particularly exacerbated by drought conditions. Climate factors moderated the competitive effects during stand development, especially the negative effects of drought index on trees.

Estimation and Spatio-Temporal Change Analysis of NPP in Subtropical Forests: A Case Study of Shaoguan, Guangdong, China

Tao Li et al.

Summary: This study explores the spatial and temporal dynamic characteristics of regional forest net primary productivity (NPP) in Shaoguan City, China, and analyzes the driving factors of NPP changes. The results show an increasing trend of NPP and the greatest influence from forest stand factors. Increasing the proportion of mixed forests and rationalizing the forest age group structure can further enhance NPP growth potential in the future.

Summary: This study modeled the above-ground biomass productivity in a permanent field plot in Northeastern China using the Random Forest algorithm. The relative importance of factors driving biomass productivity varied across different area scales, and the model accuracy improved as the grain size increased.

Improving a Process-Based Model to Simulate Forest Carbon Allocation under Varied Stand Density

Wenxing Jiao et al.

Summary: This study focused on optimizing plant density to increase carbon uptake, suggesting that in northern Jiangsu Province, a density of approximately 400 stems per hectare is optimal for aboveground biomass and soil organic carbon storage in poplar plantations.

Mapping Forest Aboveground Biomass with MODIS and Fengyun-3C VIRR Imageries in Yunnan Province, Southwest China Using Linear Regression, K-Nearest Neighbor and Random Forest

Huafang Chen et al.

Summary: This study estimated forest aboveground biomass (AGB) in Yunnan Province, China using MODIS and FY-3C imagery data. Different estimation methods were compared, and machine learning models KNN and RF performed better than MLR. FY-3C imagery showed potential as an additional optical remote sensing data source for AGB estimation, comparable to widely-used MODIS data.

The IPCC Sixth Assessment Report WGIII climate assessment of mitigation pathways: from emissions to global temperatures

Jarmo S. Kikstra et al.

Summary: This study assesses climate mitigation scenarios in IPCC AR6 WGIII and describes the assessment workflow and methods. The results show that there are 97 MAGICCv7.5.3 scenarios and 203 FaIRv1.6.2 scenarios that limit global warming to within 1.5 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the study introduces a Python package that can fully reproduce the climate assessment results.

Estimation of the relative contributions of forest areal expansion and growth to China's forest stand biomass carbon sequestration from 1977 to 2018

Miaomiao Zhao et al.

Summary: The study revealed that total forest biomass carbon sinks have been increasing in China from 1977 to 2018, largely driven by forest areal expansion. Increased biomass carbon density has played a smaller role in contributing to carbon sequestration in forests. These patterns vary at regional levels, with planted forests showing a greater contribution from FAE and natural forests exhibiting a larger role of IBCD in recent years.

Climate and large-sized trees, but not diversity, drive above-ground biomass in subtropical forests

Kauane Maiara Bordin et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the average above-ground biomass (AGB) in subtropical forests is 246 Mg ha-1, mainly driven by temperature annual range and the proportion of large-sized trees, with no predictive power from soil texture, community mean leaf nitrogen content, and functional diversity. The positive effect of large-sized trees highlights their crucial role in long-term carbon storage in mature forests.
