Keeping up with advances in qPCR pathogen detection: an example for QPX disease in hard clams

Sabrina Geraci-Yee et al.

Summary: Validated pathogen detection capabilities are crucial for effective disease management. This study reassessed and improved the quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay used for monitoring Quahog Parasite Unknown (QPX) disease. The changes made to the assay resulted in a more effective and efficient tool for disease monitoring and pathogen detection.

Temperature and Season Influence Phagocytosis by B1 Lymphocytes in the Mojave Desert Tortoise

Summer L. Slama et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between phagocytic activity of lymphocytes in desert tortoises and environmental influences as well as seasonal changes. The research found that B1 lymphocytes in the tortoises are cold-adapted and exhibit increased phagocytosis at lower temperatures. The tortoises upregulated these lymphocytes during cooler seasons and phagocytic activity also increased during this time.

Mycoplasma agassizii, an opportunistic pathogen of tortoises, shows very little genetic variation across the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts

Agusto Luzuriaga-Neira et al.

Summary: The study explored the genomic diversity of 86 cultured samples of Mycoplasma agassizii collected from mostly healthy Mojave and Sonoran desert tortoises, and found that 94% of the samples showed higher similarity to PS6(T) strain than to strain 723.
