Using computer vision to understand the global biogeography of ant color

Jacob H. H. Idec et al.

Summary: Organisms use color for various biological functions, but studying color variation at global scales presents challenges in data collection. We used a computer vision algorithm to analyze color data from over 44,000 ant specimens, revealing high intraspecific variation and questioning previous ecogeographic hypotheses. This computational approach may revolutionize data collection in functional biogeography.

Geometric morphometrics and machine learning as tools for the identification of sibling mosquito species of the Maculipennis complex (Anopheles)

Nicolo Bellin et al.

Summary: This study combined geometric morphometric approach with various machine learning algorithms to successfully distinguish four sibling species within the Anopheles Maculipennis complex based on wing geometry. The SVM algorithm performed the best on the test set, with landmarks 11, 16, and 15 identified as the most important procrustes coordinates for species differentiation.

Insect morphometry is reproducible under average investigation standards

Sandor Csoesz et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the reproducibility of morphometric studies on ants using a shared routine data collection method. The findings show that morphometric studies are reproducible when observers follow the standard protocol, making them a valuable data source for systematics.

A comparison of two methods for estimating measurement repeatability in morphometric studies

Zachariah Wylde et al.

Summary: The study found that remounting specimens between successive measurements provides more accurate estimates of measurement repeatability, especially for small and difficult-to-measure structures.

WingBank: A Wing Image Database of Mosquitoes

Flavia Virginio et al.

Summary: A platform named WingBank was developed in this study to store thousands of mosquito wing images and metadata accumulated over more than 10 years. The platform aims to address species identification and research issues in mosquito-borne disease prevention and control, providing features such as data completeness, query convenience, and support for automated identification.

Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and the Promise of Phenomics in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

Moritz D. Lurig et al.

Summary: This article explains how ecologists and evolutionary biologists use computer vision (CV) to extract and process information from digital images to collect phenotypic data. CV provides an opportunity to address the bottleneck in image analysis and can help researchers effectively capture data at the phenomic level.
