FLUID TRANSPORT IN THE BRAIN

Martin Kaag Rasmussen et al.

Summary: The brain has the ability to shift its gears between wakefulness and sleep, with information processing and behavior dominating in wakefulness and homeostatic functions prevailing during sleep. The brain relies on the glymphatic system, a fluid system comprised of the cerebrospinal fluid and perivascular spaces formed by astrocytic vascular endfeet, to clear waste products and maintain homeostasis. This system is especially active during sleep, driven by the cardiac cycle, respiration, and slow vasomotion.

Real-Time Dissecting the Dynamics of Drug Transportation in the Live Brain

Zhi-Gang Wang et al.

Summary: Brain diseases pose an increasing threat to human health, while understanding the transport mechanisms of drugs in live brains remains limited. Through tracking the dynamics of WGA in live brains, this study revealed influences of specific-binding molecules and ECS nature on transport dynamics, paving the way for exploring the biophysics of drug transport in live brains and identifying potential new therapeutic applications for brain diseases.

A Bottom-Up Approach to Red-Emitting Molecular-Based Nanoparticles with Natural Stealth Properties and their Use for Single-Particle Tracking Deep in Brain Tissue

Morgane Rosendale et al.

Summary: Fluorescent nanoparticles for bioimaging applications need to maintain chemical and photostability, small size, biocompatibility, high brightness, and good solubility, while facing the critical challenge of interacting with cellular membranes. Stealthy FONs with bright, size-tunable, red-emitting properties are reported here, allowing for deep diffusion in brain tissue without the need for antifouling agents.

NMDARs, Coincidence Detectors of Astrocytic and Neuronal Activities

Mark W. Sherwood et al.

Summary: NMDARs play a crucial role in coincidence detection during synaptic plasticity, with astrocytes regulating the availability of co-agonists to influence synaptic plasticity. The unique morphology and spatial arrangement of astrocytes allows them to integrate information from unrelated synapses at the synaptic level simultaneously.
