Epidemiology of pre-existing multimorbidity in pregnant women in the UK in 2018: a population-based cross-sectional study

Siang Ing Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of pre-existing multimorbidity in pregnant women in the United Kingdom and found that it is a common occurrence. The study also identified older age, multiple pregnancies, higher body mass index, and preconception smoking as factors associated with a higher risk of multimorbidity in pregnant women.

Maternal pregnancy outcomes in women with cardiomyopathy: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Elizabeth J. Eggleton et al.

Summary: This study systematically assessed the impact of cardiomyopathy on maternal pregnancy outcomes. The results showed that pregnant women with cardiomyopathy have higher risks for adverse maternal outcomes, including cesarean delivery, severe maternal adverse cardiovascular events, and in-hospital mortality, compared to women with no heart disease and women with noncardiomyopathy heart disease. Preconception risk assessments and management by expert teams are crucial for pregnancies affected by cardiomyopathy.

Variation in the estimated prevalence of multimorbidity: systematic review and meta-analysis of 193 international studies

Iris Szu-Szu Ho et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to estimate the pooled prevalence of multimorbidity in all age groups globally and to examine how measurement of multimorbidity impacted the estimated prevalence. The study found that the pooled prevalence of multimorbidity was significantly higher in older populations and when studies included a larger number of baseline conditions.

The impact of chronic kidney disease Stages 3-5 on pregnancy outcomes

Kate Wiles et al.

Summary: This study found that pregnancies in women with CKD Stages 3-5 are complicated by high rates of preterm delivery, low birthweight, and maternal renal function loss. Chronic hypertension, pre- or early pregnancy proteinuria, and a gestational fall in serum creatinine of <10% are key predictors of adverse obstetric and renal outcomes. Pregnancy in women with CKD Stages 3-5 advances the need for dialysis or transplantation by 2.5 years.

Examining variation in the measurement of multimorbidity in research: a systematic review of 566 studies

Iris Szu-Szu Ho et al.

Summary: This review examined the definition and measurement of multimorbidity in international peer-reviewed studies, finding a high variability in both aspects. Consistent reporting of measure definitions should be required by journals, and consensus studies are needed to define core and study-dependent conditions to include in measures of multimorbidity.
