Terahertz solid immersion microscopy: Recent achievements and challenges

N. Chernomyrdin et al.

Summary: The low spatial resolution of most modern methods of THz spectroscopy and imaging is a major limitation, but recently introduced superresolution techniques such as THz scanning-probe near-field microscopy and reflection-mode THz solid immersion microscopy offer some compromise solutions.

Near-Field Nanoscopic Terahertz Imaging of Single Proteins

Zhongbo Yang et al.

Summary: A graphene-mediated THz scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope is developed for direct imaging of single proteins, demonstrating that a graphene substrate with high THz reflectivity and atomic flatness provides high THz contrast against protein molecules. The use of an optimized length platinum probe enhances the amplitude of scattered THz near-field signals, allowing the topographical and THz scattering images of individual IgG and ferritin molecules with a few nanometers in size to be obtained simultaneously. This strategy opens up new avenues for imaging single biomolecules with THz.

Quantitative super-resolution solid immersion microscopy via refractive index profile reconstruction

N. Chernomyrdin et al.

Summary: Solid Immersion (SI) microscopy is a modern imaging modality that overcomes the Abbe diffraction limit and offers novel applications in various optical ranges. A method for resolving the SI microscopy inverse problem is developed in this paper, capable of reconstructing the RI distribution at subwavelength resolution with only intensity measurements. The linear nature of Maxwell's equations allows the method to be applied for subwavelength-resolution SI microscopy at other spectral ranges.

Nanoscale terahertz scanning probe microscopy

T. L. Cocker et al.

Summary: Terahertz scanning probe microscopy techniques, which enhance and confine light for improved spatial resolution, have been developed to overcome the diffraction limit in focusing terahertz radiation to the nanometer length scale. These techniques can achieve spatial resolution from micrometers to angstroms, with a focus on length scales relevant to material science below 100 nm. Further advancements in nanoscale terahertz scanning probe microscopy are anticipated in the future.
