The Determinants of Food Insecurity Among Hispanic/Latinx Households With Young Children: A Narrative Review

Elder Garcia Varela et al.

Summary: Food insecurity disproportionately affects Hispanic/Latinx households in the United States, particularly those with young children. There is a lack of research on the social determinants and related risk factors associated with food insecurity among Hispanic/Latinx households with children under three. This narrative review identified factors at various levels (individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and public policy/societal) that contribute to the food security status of this population.

Parental Feeding Practices in Families Experiencing Food Insecurity: A Scoping Review

Kimberley A. Baxter et al.

Summary: Parental feeding practices and styles have an impact on child diet quality and growth, but their influence in the context of disadvantage, specifically household food insecurity, is not well-studied. Further research is needed, particularly outside of the United States, with comprehensive measures of food insecurity and feeding practices.

Diet Quality and Contextual Factors Influencing Food Choice among Adolescents with Food Security and Food Insecurity in Baltimore City

Kaitlyn Harper et al.

Summary: This study found no significant differences in overall diet quality or components between adolescents with food security and those with food insecurity, except for seafood and plant proteins. Adolescents' dietary choices are influenced by their parents, home food environment, and workplace environments. Programs and policies aimed at improving healthy food access may positively impact adolescent food security and diet quality.

Family function and eating behaviours among Hispanic/Latino youth: results from the Hispanic Community Children's Health Study/Study of Latino Youth (SOL Youth)

U. Colon-Ramos et al.

Summary: This study explored the mechanisms between family function, home environment, and eating behaviors among Hispanic youth, highlighting the impact of sociocultural context on their dietary habits. The findings suggest that acculturative stress, family dynamics, and household food security are significant factors influencing fruit and vegetable consumption and empty energy consumption among Hispanic youth. Confirmation of the directionality of these associations is needed through longitudinal data analysis.

How Does the Family Influence Adolescent Eating Habits in Terms of Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices? A Global Systematic Review of Qualitative Studies

Kiki S. N. Liu et al.

Summary: This review synthesized findings from qualitative studies on family factors influencing adolescent healthy eating habits, highlighting five parental characteristics underlying food parenting practices. The study identified ten themes on how family influences adolescent dietary knowledge, attitudes, and practices, emphasizing the need to explore cultural-specific influences on adolescents' KAP, especially in Asian families. Adolescents with working parents and living in low-income families are more vulnerable to unhealthy eating.

Perceived Produce Availability and Child Fruit and Vegetable Intake: The Healthy Communities Study

Laurel F. Moffat et al.

Summary: This study found that parental perception of the food environment is associated with children's diet and weight outcomes. Optimizing access to fruits and vegetables at both neighborhood and home levels can help improve children's diet quality. However, the impact may be weaker for children living in food insecure or low-income households.

What a city eats: Examining the dietary preferences of families living in communities at high risk for food insecurity

Elaina Cummer et al.

Summary: The majority of families living in food-insecure neighborhoods and utilizing community-based hunger relief programs have children and struggle to afford their preferred foods. Cooking is mainly done using stoves, with a preference for chicken, beef, and pork, along with side dishes like potatoes, rice, and salad. These families show little interest in learning new recipes or cooking methods.
