The role of the molecular weight of the adsorbed layer on a substrate in the suppressed dynamics of supported thin polystyrene films

Weizhao Ren et al.

Summary: The adsorbed layer on a solid surface has a complex influence on the dynamics of nanoconfinement polymer materials. This study reveals that the thickness and molecular weight of the adsorbed layer strongly affects the segmental dynamics of supported thin polymer films.

Surface crystalline structure of thin poly(L-lactide) films determined by the long-range substrate effect

Jianquan Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the surface crystalline structures of thin PLLA films with different film and adsorbed layer thicknesses using GIWAXD. A highly packed alpha-form crystal was observed at the surface at a crystallization temperature of 346 K, which transformed to a loosely packed delta-form crystal with changing film and adsorbed layer thickness. The substrate effect on the surface crystalline structure was elucidated by scaling the surface crystallization rate.

Structural and Dynamical Roles of Bound Polymer Chains in Rubber Reinforcement

Daniel Salatto et al.

Summary: The addition of nanofillers to rubber matrices enhances the mechanical properties by promoting the formation of a well-developed adhesive polymer-filler interface. Through experiments and simulations, insights into the local structural and dynamical heterogeneities of bound rubber chains and their interactions with the matrix polymer have been revealed, highlighting the multiple roles in enhancing the elastic properties of filled rubber.

Direct Visualization and Characterization of Interfacially Adsorbed Polymer atop Nanoparticles and within Nanocomposites

Katelyn Randazzo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the measurement of site-specific glassy properties at the PS-adsorbed layer interface in PS-silica nanocomposites, finding a strong influence of PS adsorption on the local T-g. The correlation between adsorbed layer T-g and thickness indicated a profound impact of adsorbed layer formation on local interfacial properties in polymer nanocomposites.
