Universality in Solution Properties of Polymers in Ionic Liquids

Ryan Sayko et al.

Summary: Knowledge of the interaction parameters for polymers in different solvents is crucial for exploring the properties of polymer solutions. This study applies a scaling theory of semidilute polymer solutions to quantify the properties of polymers in different ionic liquids. The results show the existence of crossover concentrations, solution regimes, and a trend relating the interaction parameter to the van der Waals volume of the ionic liquid anion. The study also provides insights into the temperature and solvent type dependence of polymer properties.

When Do Polyelectrolytes Entangle?

Andrey Dobrynin et al.

Summary: The article discusses entanglements in polyelectrolyte solutions and proposes a method based on solution correlation length and parameters such as chain segment material type to address the issue. The research found that polyelectrolytes only entangle in concentrated solutions where concentrations are high and solution properties are similar to neutral polymers.

Scaling of Polymer Solutions as a Quantitative Tool

Andrey Dobrynin et al.

Summary: Understanding the interaction parameters and Kuhn length for a polymer/solvent pair is crucial for polymer physics of synthetic and biological macromolecules. This knowledge can be obtained from the concentration dependence of solution viscosity. The linear relationship between specific viscosity in the unentangled regime and the number of correlation blobs, as well as the extraction of B parameters from specific viscosity plateaus, is essential for describing static and dynamic solution properties of a polymer/solvent pair.
