Oil dependency, political institutions, and urban-rural disparities in access to electricity in Africa

Armand Totouom

Summary: This paper examines the impact of oil dependency on disparities in access to electricity between urban and rural areas in Africa, taking into account the quality of political institutions. The results show that oil rents (% of GDP) increase the urban-rural disparities in electricity access. However, the effect of oil dependency on these disparities is shaped by the quality of institutions. A higher institutional quality score reduces the adverse effects of oil rents on electricity access disparity, and the negative impact of oil dependency is reversed when institutional quality reaches a certain level. Robustness tests support these findings, highlighting the importance of strengthening institutional quality to overcome the resource curse in Africa.

Asymmetric influence of digital finance, and renewable energy technology innovation on green growth in China

Asif Razzaq et al.

Summary: This study examines the influence of digital finance and renewable energy technology innovation on green growth using regional data from China. The results show that digital finance stimulates green growth at middle to higher quantiles in central and eastern regions, while western regions have an insignificant impact. Similarly, RETI contributes to green growth primarily in eastern regions, with insignificant impact in western and central regions. Therefore, digital finance and RETI are imperative for regional green growth, but their marginal contribution needs to be improved in western and eastern regions.

Determinants of financial inclusion in South Asia: The moderating and mediating roles of internal conflict settlement

Muntasir Murshed et al.

Summary: This study examines the effects of internal conflicts, economic growth, information and communications technology, institutional quality, and remittance inflows on financial inclusion in selected South Asian countries. The results indicate that resolving internal conflicts, increasing mobile subscriptions, and reducing corruption can improve financial inclusivity in South Asia, while higher economic growth hinders financial inclusion. Additionally, resolving internal conflicts indirectly enhances financial inclusion by moderating the relationship between economic growth and financial inclusion, and mediating the relationship between remittance inflows and financial inclusion. Based on these findings, various financial inclusion-related policies are recommended to promote financial inclusivity across South Asia.

Are the impacts of renewable energy use on load capacity factors homogeneous for developed and developing nations? Evidence from the G7 and E7 nations

Uzma Khan et al.

Summary: Both developed and underdeveloped economies worldwide are increasingly concerned about achieving environmental sustainability, and limiting the use of fossil fuels is recognized as a key method. This study examines the impact of higher renewable energy use on the environment in the G7 and E7 countries, controlling for economic growth and population size. The results show that integrating renewable energy into the energy systems can improve environmental quality, while economic growth and population size expansion have a negative impact. The findings also differ across different groups of countries.

Household electricity demand in Latin America and the Caribbean: A meta-analysis of price elasticity

Maria Florencia Zabaloy et al.

Summary: This research examines the price elasticity of electricity demand for the residential sector in Latin American and Caribbean countries through a meta-analysis and meta-regression. The study finds that the short-term price elasticity ranges from -0.197 to -0.468, and the long-term price elasticity ranges from -0.252 to -0.331. The quality of econometric procedures significantly affects the results, and the long-term price elasticity appears to be lower compared to other regions.

Effects of income inequality and governance on energy poverty alleviation: Implications for sustainable development policy

Alex O. Acheampong et al.

Summary: This paper examines the effects of income inequality and governance on access to electricity in sub-Saharan Africa. The findings indicate that income inequality significantly reduces access to electricity, while governance is ineffective in improving it. Governance interacts with income inequality and economic growth to decrease access to electricity. The results vary among different sub-regions in sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, addressing income inequality requires strong political will and effective governance.

Technological progress observed for fixed-bottom offshore wind in the EU and UK

Srinivasan Santhakumar et al.

Summary: Offshore wind is a rapidly growing low-carbon energy technology with fluctuating technology costs. This study used three quantitative methodologies to analyze the progress of offshore wind technology in the EU and UK, and examined the factors influencing cost development. The results showed that in the early stages, an increase in specific capital expenditure led to higher average generation costs, while in the upscaling and growth stage, a decrease in specific capital expenditure resulted in significant cost reductions. Recent cost declines were attributed to improved financing conditions, increased capacity factors, and decreased technology costs.

Repercussions of Hydroelectricity use on Carbon Emissions in Bangladesh: Evidence using Novel Fourier-Bootstrapped ARDL and Fourier-Gradual Shift Causality analyses

Yubin Zheng et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the impact of hydroelectricity use on Bangladesh's fossil fuel consumption-related carbon dioxide emissions and finds that hydroelectricity consumption and economic globalization jointly reduce emissions based on oil consumption. The results also verify the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis and suggest that financial sector development can effectively reduce natural gas consumption-related emissions while urbanization amplifies emissions from all three types of fossil fuels. Therefore, the Bangladesh government needs to prioritize the production and consumption of hydroelectricity to decarbonize its economy.
