Lessons from Regional Electricity Demand Change following Natural Disasters in Japan

Akihiro Otsuka

Summary: Analyzing the impact of electricity price changes on electricity demand is essential for energy supply planning. This study estimated the electricity demand functions of households and industries and investigated the effects of electricity price hikes after natural disasters. The findings revealed that there were structural changes in the price elasticity of electricity demand in different regions following natural disasters. Moreover, the results showed that the decrease in consumer surplus due to higher electricity prices was more significant in regions relying on nuclear power. These findings have significant implications for regional energy policies.

Stochastic demand frontier analysis of residential electricity demands in Japan

Akihiro Otsuka

Summary: This study analyzed the efficiency of residential electricity demands in Japan from 1990 to 2015. The findings show that the average household size and aging population have different effects on electricity efficiency. The study also revealed that the efficiency of electricity demands is influenced by temperature variations in different regions. However, the shift in Japan's energy policy following the 2011 earthquake did not significantly impact the efficiency of residential electricity demands. These findings provide important insights into Japan's future energy demands.

Determining the efficiency of residential electricity consumption

Mark A. Andor et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the energy saving potentials in household sector by estimating inefficiency in the use of electricity and its determinants based on a sample of 2000 German households. The results suggest that there is around 20% inefficiency on average in households, indicating a notable potential for energy savings. Household size and income are identified as main determinants of individual inefficiency.
