Did border closures slow SARS-CoV-2?

Mary A. Shiraef et al.

Summary: Despite the implementation of numerous international border closures, research indicates that these measures did not effectively reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2. In contrast, national-level lockdowns were found to be strongly associated with a reduced spread of the virus. Further research is needed to evaluate the unintended consequences of border closures versus lockdowns and the effectiveness of other preventive measures introduced at international borders.

TTTTT A hot topic at the environment-health nexus: investigating the impact of climate change on infectious diseases

Lena C. Grobusch et al.

Summary: Climate change is the ultimate challenge of our time, with significant impacts on human health and society. It is expected to increase the incidence and mortality of infectious and non-infectious diseases globally. The global South is disproportionately affected by the climate crisis, with social inequalities being a major determinant of vulnerability. It is crucial to develop and implement mitigation and adaptation strategies to address this issue.

Comparative phylodynamics reveals the evolutionary history of SARS-CoV-2 emerging variants in the Arabian Peninsula

Moh A. Alkhamis et al.

Summary: This study used a Bayesian phylodynamic pipeline to track and compare the evolutionary dynamics, spatiotemporal origins, and spread of five SARS-CoV-2 variants (Alpha, Beta, Delta, Kappa, and Eta) across the Arabian Peninsula. The results showed variant-specific signatures of evolution and spread, likely associated with air travel and disease control interventions. The study highlights the importance of establishing regional molecular surveillance programs to guide interventions targeting the most relevant variants.

The phylodynamics of SARS-CoV-2 during 2020 in Finland

Phuoc Truong Nguyen et al.

Summary: Truong Nguyen, Kant, Van den Broeck et al. report the SARS-CoV-2 lineages circulating in Finland in 2020, revealing that a single introduction from Spain may have caused one-third of cases in Finland during the spring, and international travel played a major role in the spread of the virus.

Effect of travel restrictions, contact tracing and vaccination on control of emerging infectious diseases: transmission of COVID-19 as a case study

Fen-fen Zhang et al.

Summary: This study uses patch models to analyze the effects of travel restrictions, contact tracing, and vaccination on the spread of COVID-19. The results show that travel restrictions can reduce the number of cases, but they are not enough to fully control the epidemic.

Air travel and COVID-19 prevention in the pandemic and peri-pandemic period: A narrative review

Michel Bielecki et al.

Summary: Air travel during the COVID-19 pandemic faces challenges for travellers, airlines, and authorities, with reduced flights, effective preventive measures like hygiene, mask use, and social distancing, but unreliable temperature screening. The risk of in-flight transmission is low but caution is necessary, with ongoing research needed for evidence-based preventive measures and safety assessments.

Genomic epidemiology and the role of international and regional travel in the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in Zimbabwe: a retrospective study of routinely collected surveillance data

Tapfumanei Mashe et al.

Summary: The study conducted whole genome sequencing of nasopharyngeal samples collected in Zimbabwe from March 20 to October 16, 2020, and identified 26 different introductions of SARS-CoV-2 into the country, with majority of cases imported from outside Zimbabwe.

The role of high-speed rail and air travel in the spread of COVID-19 in China

Pengyu Zhu et al.

Summary: The study shows that high-speed rail and air connectivity with Wuhan accelerated the development of COVID-19, while the suspension of these links led to a decrease in the spread of the virus. The suspension effect peaked after around 20-23 days post Wuhan lockdown and gradually weakened over time.

Phylodynamics reveals the role of human travel and contact tracing in controlling the first wave of COVID-19 in four island nations

Jordan Douglas et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the epidemiological history of COVID-19 in New Zealand, Australia, Iceland, and Taiwan, finding that the effective reproduction number declined below 1 as human movement was restricted. The disease was introduced multiple times into each country but introductions significantly slowed down following the reduction of international travel in mid-March 2020. The transmission clusters identified through genomic data largely agreed with those identified through health surveillance strategies.
