Alternatives to antibiotics for organic poultry production: types, modes of action and impacts on bird's health and production

Mohamed E. Abd El-Hack et al.

Summary: The poultry industry plays a significant role in addressing the nutritional gap in many countries by providing protein-rich meat and eggs at a lower cost than other animal meat sources. Following the ban of antibiotic growth promoters, natural alternatives such as probiotics, prebiotics, organic acids, essential oils, and other feed additives have gained popularity in the poultry industry for their unique properties and positive impact on poultry production. They can easily be mixed with other feed ingredients, improve feed intake and conversion rate, enhance bird immunity and digestion, reduce antibiotic usage, and provide healthy organic products for human consumption.

The Effect of Necrotic Enteritis Challenge on Production Performance, Cecal Microbiome, and Cecal Tonsil Transcriptome in Broilers

Gabriel Akerele et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of experimental necrotic enteritis (NE) infection on production performance, gut microbiome, and cecal tonsil transcriptome in broiler birds. NE infection resulted in increased NE lesion score, decreased average weight gain, and increased mortality rate. NE infection also increased gut permeability, C. perfringens load in the ileum, and Eimeria oocyst shedding. Furthermore, NE infection decreased the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria and upregulated genes related to immune response while downregulating genes related to lipid metabolism.

The relationship among avian influenza, gut microbiota and chicken immunity: an updated overview

Mohamed E. Abd El-Hack et al.

Summary: The alimentary tract in chickens plays a crucial role in immune cell formation and challenges, and the gut microbiota has a vital impact on immune responses against viral infections. The interaction between pathogenic microorganisms and the host commensal microbiota, as well as the diversity and integrity of gut microbiota, are important factors in maintaining health and preventing diseases in chickens.

Evaluation of the Effects of Silver Nanoparticles Against Experimentally Induced Necrotic Enteritis in Broiler Chickens

Heba M. Salem et al.

Summary: Treatment with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) can reduce the colonization of Clostridium perfringens in the intestines and ceca, alleviate the severity of clinical symptoms, and decrease mortality rate. Ag NPs treatment also alleviates pathological damages in the intestines and livers, although residues are found in the muscles.

Multienzyme Super-Dosing in Broiler Chicken Diets: The Implications for Gut Morphology, Microbial Profile, Nutrient Digestibility, and Bone Mineralization

Jacoba Madigan-Stretton et al.

Summary: Optimizing gut health through super-dosing multienzymes in broilers can improve nutrient digestibility, maintain a diverse microbial population, and enhance overall villi morphology. Unique bacteria were found to be associated with super-dosing multienzymes, while bone mineralization was not affected. Super-dosing feed enzymes, particularly at a rate of 700 g/t, is recommended to improve gut morphology, nutrient digestibility, and promote unique microbes for feed efficiency.

Impact of Dietary Supplementation with Moringa oleifera Leaves on Performance, Meat Characteristics, Oxidative Stability, and Fatty Acid Profile in Growing Rabbits

Shaimaa Selim et al.

Summary: Rabbit meat is favored for its high nutritive value, but can undergo lipid peroxidation during storage. Moringa oleifera leaves are rich in nutrition and low in anti-nutritional factors, potentially preventing oxidation damage in meat. Supplementation with Moringa oleifera leaves in rabbit diets improved performance, antioxidant capacity, and meat quality, indicating beneficial impacts on rabbit growth and meat quality.

Effect of Feeding Wet Feed or Wet Feed Fermented by Bacillus licheniformis on Growth Performance, Histopathology and Growth and Lipid Metabolism Marker Genes in Broiler Chickens

Ahmed A. Saleh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of three feeding methods (dry feed, wet feed or wet feed fermented with Bacillus licheniformis) on the growth efficiency, intestinal histomorphometry, and gene expression in broiler chickens. The findings showed that fermented wet feed improved growth and digestibility, while wet feed had negative effects on performance compared to dry feed. Wet feed reduced hepatic gene expression of PPAR gamma and increased FAS expression. Fermenting wet feed with Bacillus licheniformis positively influenced feed utilization and overall performance of broiler chickens under heat stress.

Shaimaa Selim et al.

Summary: The inclusion of rice bran oil (RBO) in broiler chickens' diets improves performance, immune status, antioxidant activity, blood lipid profile, and the nutritive value of the meat. RBO supplementation leads to positive effects on productivity parameters, dressing percentage, breast yield, and immune organs relative weights, while reducing abdominal fat yield and meat lipid content. Additionally, RBO enhances antioxidant capacity, decreases cholesterol and triglycerides, and induces lipid-reducing effects in both meat and liver tissues.
