In-vitro study on the identification of gastrointestinal stromal tumor tissues using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy with chemometric methods

Bushra Sana Idrees et al.

Summary: In this work, a novel discrimination method combining chemometric algorithms with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is proposed to diagnose gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) and its healthy formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissues. The results show that the accuracy of discrimination models can be improved using chemometric methods, and the enhancement of calcium lines in LIBS signal provides a signature for the presence of GIST in FFPE tissues. This research may offer a complementary approach for the rapid detection of tumors.

Cancer treatment and survivorship statistics, 2022

Kimberly D. Miller et al.

Summary: The number of cancer survivors in the United States is increasing due to population growth, aging, and improved detection and treatment. The most prevalent cancers are prostate, skin melanoma, and colon and rectum for males, and breast, uterine corpus, and thyroid for females. Treatment disparities exist, with Black patients being less likely to be diagnosed with early-stage cancer and having lower surgical receipt rates.

Study on the Molecular Mechanisms Against Human Breast Cancer from Insight of Elemental Distribution in Tissue Based on Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS)

Hongyan Wei et al.

Summary: A visual elemental imaging platform of tumor tissue using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was developed to study anti-tumor mechanisms. Significant differences in element distribution were observed in tumor tissue from drug-loading complex treatment group. Histopathological analysis showed changes in tumor tissue morphology and density, with high levels of cleaved caspase-3 and tumor necrosis factor expressed in the treatment group.

Quantitative laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for discriminating neoplastic tissues from non-neoplastic ones

Mahmoud Al-Salihi et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a method to distinguish neoplastic tissues from non-neoplastic tissues using calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (CF-LIBS). By analyzing the plasma emission lines of different elements, the study identified higher concentrations of major and trace elements in neoplastic tissues, especially in the early temporal observation windows. The results obtained from the CF-LIBS method were in good agreement with that of Inductive coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES).

High spatial resolution imaging of melanoma tissue by femtosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Jang-Hee Choi et al.

Summary: This study reports the classification and imaging of melanoma in murine skin tissue using femtosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (fs-LIBS). The use of an ultraviolet (UV) fs-laser and support vector machine (SVM) classifier achieved an accurate classification accuracy of about 97.9%, making UV-fs-LIBS a potentially valuable tool for melanoma screening.

Simultaneous quantification of Au and Ag composition from Au-Ag bi-metallic LIBS spectra combined with shallow neural network model for multi-output regression

Lingamurthy Narlagiri et al.

Summary: In this study, a multi-output regression model was utilized to predict the composition of gold and silver, with dimensionality reduction using PCA before training the model. The success was demonstrated by accurately predicting unseen data with less than 10% error, showcasing the potential for further development in predicting multiple elements simultaneously.

Imaging margins of skin tumors using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy and machine learning

Katerina Kiss et al.

Summary: Laser-based techniques are widely utilized in medicine, with a focus on therapeutic applications and potential for diagnostic approaches. The study explores the application of laser-based spectroscopy in skin cancer assessment, utilizing modern techniques such as machine learning and analytical chemistry. The use of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) in combination with standard histopathology shows promise in providing insights into tumor progression and tissue differences, with the potential of machine learning for processing LIBS data.
