Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Linking Animal Welfare and Antibiotic Use in Pig Farming-A Review

Rita Albernaz-Goncalves et al.

Summary: Minimising stress in intensive pig farms is crucial for raising immunocompetent pigs. The study explores the relationship between chronic stress, diseases, antibiotic use, and potential improvements in housing and management. Advocate for enhanced animal welfare to combat antimicrobial resistance and ensure pigs' well-being.

HAM-ART: An optimised culture-free Hi-C metagenomics pipeline for tracking antimicrobial resistance genes in complex microbial communities

Lajos Kalmar et al.

Summary: Shotgun metagenomics is a powerful tool for identifying AMR genes in microbiomes but lacks the ability to link extrachromosomal DNA to bacterial chromosomes. We present HAM-ART, a comprehensive pipeline for generating metagenome-assembled genomes that includes both chromosomal and extrachromosomal AMR genes. The pipeline's performance was demonstrated in a study comparing pig faecal microbiomes from low- and high-antimicrobial use farms, revealing significant differences in AMR gene distribution.

Review: Mitigating the risks posed by intensification in livestock production: the examples of antimicrobial resistance and zoonoses

W. Gilbert et al.

Summary: The intensification of livestock systems has led to increased access to protein-rich foods, but also brought along environmental degradation, zoonotic disease transmission and antimicrobial resistance genes. Low- and middle-income countries are likely to experience significant intensification in livestock production in the near future, highlighting the need for rapid knowledge transfer and risk mitigation capacity building.

Concentrating vs. spreading our footprint: how to meet humanity's needs at least cost to nature

A. Balmford

Summary: Feeding, housing, clothing, and powering 11 billion people without harming species and climate is a major challenge. The land-sharing/sparing concept offers a framework to find production systems that meet human needs while minimizing overall cost to nature. Important questions exist regarding sustainable high-yield farming and ensuring it spares natural habitats.

Analysis of synergies and trade-offs between animal welfare, ammonia emission, particulate matter emission and antibiotic use in Dutch broiler production systems

Luuk S. M. Vissers et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the external factors affecting animal welfare, environment, and human health in broiler production systems, and explored the synergies and trade-offs between different production systems. The results showed that changes such as shifting to slower-growing breeds and reducing protein content in feed can improve animal welfare and reduce antibiotic use, highlighting the potential for sustainable development in broiler production systems.

Review: Trends for meat, milk and egg consumption for the next decades and the role played by livestock systems in the global production of proteins

M. Henchion et al.

Summary: This study examines trends in animal-sourced foods since 2000 and projects future demand for animal-sourced protein. Variations in demand for animal versus plant-sourced protein and consumption levels across different regions are identified. The study highlights the importance of regional-specific strategies to address the challenge of sustainable livestock production and consumption.

Global greenhouse gas emissions from animal-based foods are twice those of plant-based foods

Xiaoming Xu et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed account of greenhouse gas emissions from plant- and animal-based foods worldwide, with agriculture and land use identified as major sources of emissions. Rice and beef were found to be the largest contributing commodities, with global emissions primarily coming from the production of animal-based food.
