Novel Perfluorooctanesulfonate-Imprinted Polymer Immobilized on Spent Coffee Grounds Biochar for Selective Removal of Perfluoroalkyl Acids in Synthetic Wastewater

Jessica M. Steigerwald et al.

Summary: Wastewater is a significant source of PFAAs in the environment. Conventional treatment methods and nonselective adsorbents have limited efficacy in removing PFAAs. This study explores the use of PFOS-templated MIP immobilized on spent coffee grounds biochar as a potential alternative for effective wastewater PFAA treatment. The MIPs demonstrated high selectivity for PFOS and comparable PFAA adsorption to unmodified biochar in ultrapure water.

Interaction Mechanisms and Interface Configuration of Cysteine Adsorbed on Gold, Silver, and Copper Nanoparticles

Penelope Rodriguez-Zamora et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the interaction between cysteine and gold, silver, and copper nanoparticles through experimental analysis and theoretical calculations. The results show that while the C-S bond and carboxyl group are similarly affected by adsorption, the amino group is influenced by the electronegativity of each metal. Theoretical calculations suggest the formation of organic-metallic complexes with different conformations on the surfaces of gold, silver, and copper nanoparticles.

Theoretical Study of the Binding of the Thiol-Containing Cysteine Amino Acid to the Silver Surface Using a Cluster Model

Pham Vu Nhat et al.

Summary: Computational approaches within the framework of density functional theory were used to elucidate the binding mechanism of cysteine amino acid on silver nanoparticles. The study found that cysteine molecules prefer to adsorb on silver clusters via their amine group in vacuum and highly acidic conditions, while the thiolate head is the most energetically favorable binding site in aqueous solution. The stability and frontier orbital energy gap of the clusters capped by cysteine are significantly improved, especially in aqueous solution.
