Construction of strong and tough carboxymethyl cellulose-based oriented hydrogels by phase separation

Li Zhong et al.

Summary: Researcher have developed strong and tough carboxymethyl cellulose-based conductive hydrogels with oriented hierarchical structures. These hydrogels were prepared using pre-stretching, solvent displacement induced phase separation, and subsequent ionic crosslinking immobilization. The hydrogels exhibited improved tensile strength and toughness compared to traditional carboxymethyl cellulose-based hydrogels, and they also had good underwater stability and conductivity due to ion cross-linking and directional stratification structure. These characteristics make hydrogel sensors suitable for applications in flexible wearable devices, anisotropic sensors, and intelligent underwater devices.

Fatemeh Nazoori et al.

Summary: The research aimed to evaluate the effects of applying carnauba wax and carboxymethyl cellulose coating on pomegranate fruits during storage. The study found that carnauba wax treatment was more effective in preserving anthocyanin, flavonoid, and fruit firmness, while carboxymethyl cellulose treatment was better at maintaining fruit weight, pH, vitamin C content, and phenolic compounds. Carboxymethyl cellulose (1%) showed the best results after 100 days of storage, while carnauba wax (1%) worked best after 50 days of storage. Rating: 7/10.

Understanding the impact of pectin on browning of polyphenol oxidation system in thermal and storage processing

Jiaxing Hu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the browning of processed fruit products is affected not only by polyphenol oxidation but also by cell wall polysaccharides (pectin). The interaction between pectin and the catechin/chlorogenic acid oxidation system determines the browning process, which is dependent on the structure and concentration of pectin.

Recent advances in carboxymethyl chitosan-based materials for biomedical applications

Yongtao Geng et al.

Summary: Chitosan and its derivatives have been widely used in the biomedical field due to their biodegradability, biocompatibility, antibacterial activity, and adhesive properties. However, the low solubility of chitosan at physiological pH limits its applications in systems requiring higher dissolving ability and suitable drug release rates. Carboxymethyl chitosan, as a water-soluble derivative, shows improved properties and is more suitable for wound healing, drug delivery, and tissue engineering applications. This review focuses on the bioactivities of carboxymethyl chitosan, including antibacterial, anticancer, antitumor, antioxidant, and antifungal effects, as well as its recent applications in wound healing, drug delivery, tissue engineering, bioimaging, and cosmetics.

Effect and characterization of polysaccharides extracted from Chlorella sp. by hot-water and alkali extraction methods

Fen Liu et al.

Summary: This study characterized and compared the physicochemical properties and antioxidant activity of Chlorella sp. polysaccharides extracted using different methods (hot-water extraction and alkali extraction). The dissolution percent of polysaccharides reached maximum values at 120 degrees C and 4% alkali concentration. Both methods extracted polysaccharides with the same monosaccharide components, but the alkali extraction method yielded polysaccharides with higher molecular weight. High temperature and alkali concentration degraded polysaccharides and destroyed carboxyl groups. The polysaccharides from alkali extraction showed better antioxidant activity, with the 1% alkali concentration extract exhibiting the highest scavenging rates of DPPH and center dot OH. Overall, this study highlights the importance of considering the extraction conditions on the physicochemical properties and antioxidant activity of Chlorella polysaccharides.

Sutee Wangtueai et al.

Summary: In this study, thermoplastic starch (TPS) was modified by incorporating gelatin (Gel) and polyethylene-grafted-maleic anhydride (PEMAH) to improve its mechanical properties. The addition of Gel improved the morphology of the TPS/PEMAH blend, resulting in the formation of nanoparticles. It was found that the reaction between Gel and PEMAH enhanced interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties.

Modification of corn starch by thermal-ultrasound treatment in presence of Arabic gum

Abdolkhalegh Golkar et al.

Summary: This research investigates the effects of thermal-ultrasound treatment on the physicochemical, structural, and pasting properties of corn starch in the presence of Arabic gum. The treatment increases the swelling power and solubility of samples and reduces syneresis of starch gels. The study also finds that longer treatment time and higher temperature lead to greater modifications in the starch granules.

Unfilled Natural Rubber Compounds Containing Bio-Oil Cured with Different Curing Systems: A Comparative Study

Chesidi Hayichelaeh et al.

Summary: This study examines the properties of unfilled natural rubber compounds containing bio-oils cured with peroxide and discusses their comparison to compounds cured with sulfur. Bio-oils had no significant effect on peroxide curing but led to faster vulcanization in the sulfur system. The bio-oils strongly influenced the crosslink density of the rubber compounds. The properties of the compounds varied based on the different levels of crosslink density, with higher density resulting in increased modulus, tensile strength, and hardness, and decreased elongation at break and compression set. The use of bio-oils in sulfur-cured compounds showed less deterioration in properties compared to peroxide-cured compounds.
