Delayed diagnosis of Kawasaki disease in Malaysia: Who is at risk and what is the outcome

Mohd Nizam Mat Bah et al.

Summary: Background data on the delayed diagnosis of Kawasaki disease (KD) is limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and trend of delayed diagnosis over time and identify the associated risk factors in Malaysia. The overall prevalence of delayed diagnosis was 9.9%, and the majority of cases were due to failure to diagnose the disease during the initial consultation. Risk factors for delayed diagnosis included children older than 1 year, atypical presentation, and incomplete KD. Delayed diagnosis was significantly associated with coronary aneurysms.

The Impact of Onset Age on Eosinophils in Kawasaki Disease

Yu-Jhen Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared the age-adjusted Z-score of eosinophils in Kawasaki disease patients and found that children under 6 months old at onset of the disease had persistently elevated eosinophil levels. Furthermore, there was a relationship between eosinophil count and coronary artery lesions. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring allergic diseases and eosinophil levels in Kawasaki disease patients.

Combination of Hemoglobin-for-Age Z-Score and Plasma Hepcidin Identified as a Novel Predictor for Kawasaki Disease

Ya-Ling Yang et al.

Summary: A novel predictor using the hemoglobin-for-age z-score and plasma hepcidin has been developed to differentiate Kawasaki disease from febrile children. This predictor shows a better discriminatory ability and can assist front-line physicians in recognizing and providing early treatment for Kawasaki disease.

Predictive role of sampling-time specific prognostic nutritional index cut-off values for intravenous immunoglobulin resistance and cardiovascular complications in Kawasaki disease

Xiaoliang Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of prognostic nutritional index (PNI) in predicting intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) resistance and cardiovascular complications in Kawasaki disease (KD). The results showed that lower levels of PNI were independent risk factors for initial IVIG resistance and cardiovascular complications. The sampling-time specific PNI cut-off values demonstrated good predictive power for both IVIG resistance and cardiovascular complications.

Lockdown measures during the COVID-19 pandemic strongly impacted the circulation of respiratory pathogens in Southern China

Heping Wang et al.

Summary: A study in Shenzhen investigated the impact of public health measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence of respiratory pathogens in children. The study found a significant decrease in hospital admissions for respiratory infections post-lockdown, with reductions observed in Mycoplasma pneumoniae, influenza virus A, and adenovirus infections. However, there was an increase in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and human para-influenza virus (HPIV) infections during this period. The findings highlight the effects of pandemic control measures on different respiratory pathogens in children.

Incidence of Kawasaki Disease Before and After the COVID-19 Pandemic in Japan Results of the 26th Nationwide Survey, 2019 to 2020

Ryusuke Ae et al.

Summary: This cohort study found that the number of patients diagnosed with Kawasaki disease (KD) decreased by approximately one-third across Japan in 2020, with no indication that parents avoided a hospital visit. Differences in KD incidence reduction patterns before and after the initiation of COVID-19 pandemic mitigation measures were found in patients with KD aged younger than 12 months compared with those 24 months or older, suggesting a potential KD pathogenesis involving transmission among children.

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that NLR, CRP, PLR, and combined NLR/PLR have a good prognostic value in predicting resistance to IVIG in patients with Kawasaki disease, with moderate to high sensitivity and specificity. Further research on the accuracy of these markers in various combinations is needed.

The impact of the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) in gastric cancer

Jorge Nogueiro et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of prognostic nutritional index (PNI) on the prognosis of gastric cancer patients undergoing curative resection surgery was evaluated. The results showed that higher PNI was associated with longer overall survival (OS), better disease-free survival (DFS), and had a protective effect on postoperative morbidity and mortality. Therefore, PNI can be used to predict patients at increased risk of postoperative morbidity and mortality and help identify candidate patients who would benefit from perioperative nutritional support to improve surgical outcomes.

Complement 3 and the Prognostic Nutritional Index Distinguish Kawasaki Disease from Other Fever Illness with a Nomogram

Yi-Shuang Huang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish a model to distinguish Kawasaki disease from other fever illnesses using prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and immunological factors. Patients with Kawasaki disease showed increased levels of C3 and decreased nutritional index compared to children with febrile diseases. The nomogram established with these factors effectively identified Kawasaki disease from febrile illness in children.
