Loneliness, Depression, and Genetics in the Elderly: Prognostic Factors of a Worse Health Condition?

Summary: This study examined the relationship between loneliness and health status in the elderly, and identified telomeres and BDNF as mediators between loneliness and depression. The group with loneliness and depression exhibited poorer health and cognitive status, lower quality of life, and lower physical activity.

Summary: The prevalence of multimorbidity among adults in China aged 45 years and older was 62.1% in 2015, and was increased with older age, among women, in a higher socio-economic group and in the most deprived regions. Multimorbidity is associated with an increased likelihood of experiencing ADL limitation, IADL limitation, and depression.

Lonely in a crowd: investigating the association between overcrowding and loneliness using smartphone technologies

Summary: This study found associations between social and environmental factors and feelings of loneliness. Overcrowding and population density were positively associated with loneliness, while social inclusivity and contact with nature were negatively associated. The positive association between social inclusivity and lower levels of loneliness was more pronounced when participants were in contact with nature, indicating an interaction between social and built environments on loneliness.
