Diffusion MRI in Peripheral Nerves: Optimized b Values and the Role of Non-Gaussian Diffusion

Olivia Foesleitner et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the optimal tissue-specific diffusion-weighted imaging strategy in peripheral nerves. The results showed that the biexponential and kurtosis models had better curve fitting performance, and kurtosis-derived parameters may be promising novel imaging markers for peripheral nerve diseases.

Diffusion Tensor Imaging of the Sciatic Nerve as a Surrogate Marker for Nerve Functionality of the Upper and Lower Limb in Patients With Diabetes and Prediabetes

Johann M. E. Jende et al.

Summary: The study shows that the sciatic nerve's fractional anisotropy is a surrogate marker for functional and electrophysiological parameters of both upper and lower limbs in patients with diabetes and prediabetes, suggesting that nerve damage in these patients affects the entire peripheral nervous system rather than being limited to symptomatic limbs.

Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging towards clinical application in multiple sclerosis

Cristina Granziera et al.

Summary: Quantitative MRI provides biophysical measures of the microstructural integrity of the CNS, allowing comparisons across different regions, patients, and centres. In patients with multiple sclerosis, quantitative MRI techniques offer insight into disease mechanisms beyond what traditional MRI can provide, including assessment of diffuse damage, heterogeneity of lesions, and specific damage to CNS tissues. Emerging applications of quantitative MRI in both research and clinical settings aim to improve patient stratification, assess disease progression, and evaluate treatment response.

Assessing Lumbar Plexus and Sciatic Nerve Damage in Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis Using Magnetisation Transfer Ratio

Ratthaporn Boonsuth et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess peripheral nervous system (PNS) damage in people with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) using magnetisation transfer ratio (MTR) imaging at the lumbar plexus and sciatic nerve anatomical locations. The results showed significantly lower MTR values in the sciatic nerve of RRMS patients compared to healthy controls, but no significant changes were identified in the lumbar plexus.
