fMRI-based validation of continuous-wave fNIRS of supplementary motor area activation during motor execution and motor imagery

Franziska Klein et al.

Summary: This study compared fNIRS and fMRI for neurofeedback applications in healthy older participants, focusing on the SMA region. Results showed subtle differences in different MI tasks, with Delta[HbR] being the more specific signal for both whole body and hand MI movements. Selecting fNIRS channels based on individual anatomy did not improve results. Overall, the study suggests that SMA activation can be reliably measured with CW-fNIRS in terms of spatial specificity and task sensitivity.
