Functional characterization of 5′-regulatory region of flavonoid 3′,5′-hydroxylase-1 gene of banana plants

Sanjana Negi et al.

Summary: This study characterized the regulatory region of the F3'5'H-1 gene in banana and found that it is activated in response to stress conditions and shows tissue-specific expression. Transgenic tobacco plants carrying PMusaF3'5'H-1-GUS demonstrated strong expression in guard cells, indicating its activity in these cells. The results suggest the potential of PMusaF3'5'H-1 for generating stress-tolerant crops and studying guard cell functions.

Molecular Effects of Iodine-Biofortified Lettuce in Human Gastrointestinal Cancer Cells

Olga Sularz et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of iodine-biofortified lettuce on anti-tumor properties in human gastrointestinal cancer cell lines. The results showed that extracts from iodine-biofortified lettuce reduced the viability and proliferation of gastric and colon cancer cells. The extracts also affected cell cycle and protein expression, mediating the anti-tumor effects.

Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant Metabolism under Adverse Environmental Conditions: a Review

Pedro Garcia-Caparros et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are natural byproducts of oxygen metabolism, primarily generated in cell compartments such as the apoplast, mitochondria, chloroplasts, and peroxisomes. Cells have a balance between ROS generation and elimination, but this balance can be disrupted by various stress factors, leading to cellular damage. The antioxidant defense system in cells, composed of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, works together to scavenge ROS and plays a crucial role in plant immunity, growth, and development.

Poplar MYB117 promotes anthocyanin synthesis and enhances flavonoid B-ring hydroxylation by up-regulating the flavonoid 3′,5′-hydroxylase gene

Dawei Ma et al.

Summary: Flavonoids are important secondary metabolites in plants, regulated by MYB transcription factors. The study identified that the MYB activator MYB117 can enhance anthocyanin accumulation in hybrid poplar by up-regulating F3'5'H1, resulting in increased B-ring hydroxylation.

Evidences for a Nutritional Role of Iodine in Plants

Claudia Kiferle et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of low concentrations of iodine on Arabidopsis thaliana, finding that micromolar concentrations of iodine benefit plant growth and flowering, and may protect against various stressors. Additionally, the study demonstrated iodine organification in proteins and identified functional differences in iodinated proteins in different plant tissues.

Kinga Keska et al.

Summary: This study identified candidate genes associated with long-term waterlogging tolerance in cucumber using RNA sequencing, revealing divergent impacts of long-term waterlogging on gene expression in different accessions. Various genes related to waterlogging processes were identified, and the effectiveness of priming in enhancing stress tolerance was confirmed through qRT-PCR assays.

New Aspects of Uptake and Metabolism of Non-organic and Organic Iodine Compounds-The Role of Vanadium and Plant-Derived Thyroid Hormone Analogs in Lettuce

Sylwester Smolen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the uptake, transport, and metabolism of different iodine compounds in lettuce plants, finding that the efficiency of 5-ISA and 3,5-diISA was higher than that of KIO3. The research showed that plant-synthesized iodosalicylates are similar to other organic iodine metabolites, and T3 and T4 were synthesized in roots and then transported to leaves.

Ashish Sharma et al.

Summary: The study investigates the biosynthetic machinery of picrosides in Picrorhiza kurroa, showing that the regulation and degradation of ABA play crucial roles in the organ-specific accumulation of picroside-I and picroside-II. Biosynthesis, condensation and glucosylation of isoprene units may occur in shoots, roots or stolons.
