Physiologically relevant miRNAs in mammalian oocytes are rare and highly abundant

Shubhangini Kataruka et al.

Summary: miRNAs are important negative regulators of gene expression in mammalian cells, but their repressive activity is weak during oocyte and maternal-to-zygotic transition. Certain miRNAs, such as porcine ssc-miR-205 and bovine bta-miR-10b, are exceptions and can efficiently suppress gene expression despite the diluting effect of oocyte growth. The study highlights the importance of establishing a favorable miRNA:mRNA stoichiometry for effective gene suppression.

miR-26a-5p and miR-125b-5p affect trophoblast genes and cell functions important during early pregnancy†

Joanna Szuszkiewicz et al.

Summary: Embryo implantation is the most critical stage of pregnancy, dependent on the synchronized developmental capacity of the embryo and uterine receptivity. In early pregnancy, both the conceptus and uterus release various factors to facilitate successful implantation and placenta formation. MicroRNAs, which regulate gene expression, are considered important regulators of early pregnancy events.

Novel Gold Nanoparticle-Based Quick Small-Exosome Isolation Technique from Serum Sample at a Low Centrifugal Force

Krishna Thej Pammi Guru et al.

Summary: Exosomes, secreted by most cells, are present in biological fluids such as blood, tears, sweat, and urine, containing lipids, DNA, proteins, and RNA. There is a need for rapid and efficient methods to isolate small exosomes, with current techniques being time-consuming and instrument-dependent. A new technique using citrate-capped gold nanoparticles has shown promise in selectively isolating small exosomes from serum in less than two hours.

MiR-202-3p determines embryo viability during mid-blastula transition

Ruiqin Hu et al.

Summary: Developmental growth is a complex process that involves the coordinated regulation of gene expression. This study identifies miR-202-3p as a key factor in determining embryonic fate during the mid-blastula transition (MBT) in zebrafish. miR-202-3p regulates the expression of a trio of genes involved in cell proliferation and survival, and is crucial for embryonic viability and development during MBT.

Spotlight on plant RNA-containing extracellular vesicles

Alessa Ruf et al.

Summary: Extracellular vesicles carrying RNA in plant cell biology have gained increasing attention. It was previously believed that EV release or uptake through the rigid plant cell wall was impossible, and RNA outside cells was unstable. However, the identification of EV biomarkers has provided new insights into the functional roles of EVs in transporting their RNA cargo for systemic spread in plants and for invading pathogens. Although RNA-binding proteins are thought to play key roles in EV-mediated RNA secretion and transport, the mechanisms of RNA sorting and EV translocation through the plant cell wall and plasma membrane are still not well understood. Characterizing the molecular players and cellular mechanisms of plant RNA-containing EVs will contribute to our understanding of cell-to-cell and inter-organismal communication.
