A critical review of recent trends in sample classification using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS)

L. Brunnbauer et al.

Summary: LIBS-based classification has attracted increasing interest in recent years. LIBS is a suitable technique for classification tasks based on elemental fingerprinting, providing fast simultaneous multi-element analysis with stand-off, online, and portable capabilities. However, the use of classification algorithms as black boxes hinders their adequate application, especially for non-data scientists. This review comprehensively introduces the steps and principles of achieving a well-performing classifier from recorded LIBS data, and discusses the advantages, limitations, and diversity of machine learning algorithms used in LIBS-classification literature.

Magnesium and the Brain: A Focus on Neuroinflammation and Neurodegeneration

Jeanette A. M. Maier et al.

Summary: Magnesium plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and maintaining tissue homeostasis, including the brain. It is essential for nerve signal transmission and protecting the blood-brain barrier. Deficiency in magnesium can lead to systemic low-grade inflammation, which is common in various diseases, particularly neurodegenerative disorders. This review provides evidence linking magnesium imbalance to multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's diseases.

The Role of Minerals in the Optimal Functioning of the Immune System

Christopher Weyh et al.

Summary: This review emphasizes the essential role of minerals in the optimal functioning of the immune system and inflammation regulation. It highlights the importance of a balanced diet in supplying necessary minerals for immune support, while also cautioning against over-consumption of supplements. Certain at-risk groups should pay attention to ensure they are receiving sufficient supply of key minerals to maintain immune competence and systemic inflammation regulation.

Qualitative Analysis of Glass Microfragments Using the Combination of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy and Refractive Index Data

David Jeno Palasti et al.

Summary: We have successfully demonstrated that the qualitative discrimination analysis of sub-mm sized glass samples can be solved with high accuracy and reliability using multivariate chemometric evaluation of LIBS data or in combination with pre-screening based on refractive index data. Classification tree and random forest methods showed the most consistent and accurate results, with classifications/identifications correct in 92 to 99% of the cases for soda-lime glasses.

Calibration strategies for laser ablation ICP-MS in biological studies: A review

Huijie Pan et al.

Summary: Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) has high sensitivity and sufficient spatial resolution for in-situ analysis and imaging in biological studies. However, matrix effect and elemental fractionation pose challenges for quantitative analysis. This review discusses various calibration strategies for LA-ICP-MS, including internal standardization, external calibration, isotope dilution, and machine learning-based calibration, to achieve accurate quantification in biological studies.

A novel approach for discovering correlations between elemental and molecular composition using laser-based spectroscopic techniques

Nikolai I. Sushkov et al.

Summary: This study used modern analytical techniques and chemometric techniques to analyze zooplankton organisms that accumulate lithium. The study found correlations between the elemental and molecular composition of zooplankton. By using different algorithms to process the spectra data, the study revealed correlations between lithium and potassium, carotenoids, and tryptophan. The combination of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, followed by appropriate mathematical treatment, is a convenient tool for comprehensive studies of environmental objects.

Classification of minerals and the assessment of lithium and beryllium content in granitoid rocks by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Patrick Janovszky et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the efficiency of LIBS mapping and spatially resolved local analysis for mineral classification and geological prospecting. Statistical approaches like CT, LDA, and RF show good classification accuracies, with RF and LDA performing better. Multiple analytical locations within each grain can provide more reliable discrimination, and LIBS elemental mapping combined with matrix-matched calibration can offer valuable information on element distribution. Mining for Be and Li in granitoid rocks should target biotite and amphibole grains based on the results.
