Expression of microRNA Predicts Cardiovascular Events in Patients with Stable Coronary Artery Disease

Oliver Buchhave Pedersen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether the expression of selected candidate miRNAs can predict cardiovascular events in stable CAD patients. Among 749 patients, adding miR-223-3p expression to traditional cardiovascular risk factors improved the predictive value of ST, the primary composite endpoint, and the secondary endpoint of the composite of nonfatal MI and ST. Clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings.

The Role of microRNA in the Development, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease: Recent Developments

Anetta Wronska

Summary: Since their discovery in 1993, microRNAs (miRNAs) have been identified as key regulators in various cellular processes, including cardiovascular disease (CVD). They have been found to control the expression of genes involved in cardiac development and function, as well as the development and progression of CVD. This article reviews recent advancements in understanding the role of miRNAs in CVD and explores their potential use as therapeutic targets and biomarkers for CVD diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. Although there are promising miRNA-based therapeutic agents in development, they have yet to be approved for clinical use.

Associations between circulating microRNAs and coronary plaque characteristics: potential impact from physical exercise

Maria Dalen Taraldsen et al.

Summary: This study found that specific miRs were associated with coronary plaque components in patients with coronary artery disease. After aerobic exercise intervention, changes in miR levels were associated with a regression of coronary plaque burden. These findings may contribute to the development of biomarkers for coronary artery disease and coronary plaque composition.

New insights into macrophage subsets in atherosclerosis

Yurong Wang et al.

Summary: Macrophages in atherosclerotic patients exhibit plasticity and heterogeneity. Single-cell RNA sequencing has revealed the presence of multiple macrophage subsets in atherosclerotic plaque lesions, which differ in gene expression and functions. These macrophage subsets play important roles in various aspects of plaque development, stabilization, regression, and rupture. Identification of these subsets and understanding their molecular mechanisms may lead to new therapeutic targets for atherosclerosis.

Functional Association of miR-133b and miR-21 Through Novel Gene Targets ATG5, LRP6 and SGPP1 in Coronary Artery Disease

Dinesh Kumar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the differential expression profiles of miR-133b and miR-21 in patients with coronary artery disease. Potential target genes of these miRNAs are predicted and validated, and the expression patterns of these genes are evaluated in patients and macrophages. The results suggest that SGPP1, ATG5, and LRP6 may serve as potential therapeutic targets in the management of coronary artery disease.

MicroRNAs: roles in cardiovascular development and disease

Samira Kalayinia et al.

Summary: miRNAs play crucial roles in heart development, remodeling, and diseases, with abnormal expression or genetic deletion associated with cardiac cell differentiation, disruption in heart development, and cardiac dysfunction. Evidence suggests miRNAs are involved in CVD development and can serve as diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic tools. The review provides an overview of miRNAs in heart biology, development, and diseases.
