The Impact of Sanding and Thermal Compression of Wood, Varnish Type and Artificial Aging in Indoor Conditions on the Varnished Surface Color

Pavlo Bekhta et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare two different pre-treatment processes of wooden surfaces before varnishing and evaluate their impact on the color characteristics of the varnished surface. It was found that the thermally densified surface-varnished veneer is more resistant to color changes during artificial aging, and the transparent varnish systems showed better photo-stability when used on thermally densified wood.

Influence of Wood Surface Preparation on Roughness, Wettability and Coating Adhesion of Unmodified and Thermally Modified Wood

Josip Miklecic et al.

Summary: This research investigated the impact of face milling, sanding, and UV irradiation on the wetting and adhesion strength of solvent-based and water-borne coatings on hornbeam and ash wood samples. The results showed that sanding resulted in smoother surfaces, water-borne coatings had higher contact angles, and UV irradiation decreased adhesion strength of solvent-based coatings.

Immobilization of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) in Polysulfone Membranes by Radically-Initiated Crosslinking Using Potassium Persulfate

Danae Gonzalez Ortiz et al.

Summary: Polysulfone membranes with poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) as a pore-forming and hydrophilic additive were prepared using the non-solvent-induced phase separation technique. The immobilization of PVP through radical-initiated crosslinking was studied to enhance the surface hydrophilicity of the membranes. The crosslinking progress was influenced by temperature, KPS concentration, and reaction time. The degree of PVP crosslinking affected the structure and properties of the membranes.

Understanding the role of Dimethylformamide as co-solvents in the dissolution of cellulose in ionic liquids: Experimental and theoretical approach

R. Phadagi et al.

Summary: Cellulose dissolution using ionic liquids (ILs) with N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as a co-solvent was studied, showing enhanced solubility with the presence of DMF. The study involved theoretical chemistry tools such as COSMO-RS analysis, as well as natural bond orbital (NBO), Fragment molecular orbital (FMO) and chemical reactivity analyses. The regenerated cellulose from both solvent systems exhibited excellent mechanical properties as characterized by various techniques.

Summary: The use of lithium bromide ionic salt dispersed with PVDF-HFP/PVP blend polymers has been studied for solid-state lithium batteries, with higher conducting samples following the Arrhenius relationship and ion transport mechanisms coinciding with the correlated barrier height (CBH) model. Conductivity based on dielectric constant obeys modified Arrhenius behavior and ionic diffusion is verified through tunneling mechanism.

Physically Switchable Antimicrobial Surfaces and Coatings: General Concept and Recent Achievements

Roman Elashnikov et al.

Summary: Bacterial colonization and biofilm formation on surfaces pose significant challenges, leading to the development of surfaces resistant to bacterial colonization being actively pursued. The design of nanostructured smart surfaces with physical activation for antimicrobial protection shows promise, particularly with multistimuli surface triggering for better control of surface properties and utilization of different antimicrobial mechanisms. Recent trends include the development of hybrid approaches for surface activation at the right time and place.
