Hybrid Dispersion Engineering based on Chiral Metamirror

Jinxing Li et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel method for dispersion control in optical systems - chirality-assisted phase modulation, which allows for engineered dispersion characteristics of meta-atoms. Two hybrid dispersion-engineered metamirrors are constructed and tested to demonstrate the effectiveness and flexibility of this method. This research opens up a new approach for dispersion control and provides new insights for metasurface design.

Pulse-driven self-reconfigurable meta-antennas

Daiju Ushikoshi et al.

Summary: Metasurface-based antennas can adjust antenna performances according to the time width of electromagnetic pulses, which advances the design of antennas and wireless communication environments. The proposed concept goes beyond conventional performance and can be applied for sensing, selective reception, and mutual communications based on pulse width, thus expanding existing frequency resources.

Metasurface-inspired maintenance-free Internet of things tags characterised in both frequency and time domains

Masaya Tashiro et al.

Summary: The authors present metasurface-inspired maintenance-free IoT tags that can be characterized by both frequency-domain and time-domain profiles. The waveform-selective mechanisms of circuit-based metasurfaces allow the tags to behave differently at the same frequency based on the pulse duration of the incident wave. The proposed designs are validated numerically and experimentally, and potentially contribute to increasing the capacity of IoT tags within a single wireless network while reducing maintenance effort.

Metasurfaces 3.0: A New Paradigm for Enabling Smart Electromagnetic Environments

Mirko Barbuto et al.

Summary: So far, the environment has been seen as a limitation to communication systems, but recent research shows that it can be used as a new degree of freedom to enhance system performance. Intelligent surfaces, specifically metasurfaces, offer a promising solution for controlling electromagnetic wave propagation and have the potential to overcome detrimental effects in wireless communications.

High-Performance Energy Selective Surface Based on the Double-Resonance Concept

Lin Zhou et al.

Summary: This article proposes a high-performance energy selective surface (ESS) based on a double-resonance concept, achieving low insertion loss (IL) and high shielding effectiveness (SE) through well-designed patterns and properly chosen diodes for passband and stopband resonances. Single-layer and double-layer ESS samples operating at 3 GHz demonstrate the double-resonance concept, with the latter achieving a broader bandwidth with high SE. Equivalent circuit models are used to explain how the double resonances are produced and a wide bandwidth of high SE is obtained, with good agreement between simulation and measurement results.

A wireless communication scheme based on space- and frequency-division multiplexing using digital metasurfaces

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: Digitally programmable metasurfaces can be used for wireless communication to implement both space- and frequency-division multiplexing, encoding messages through multiple channels to transmit directly to different users at different locations simultaneously without the need for digital-to-analogue conversion and mixing processes. Using a dual-channel wireless communication system based on a two-bit space-time-coding digital metasurface, two different pictures were transmitted to two users simultaneously in real time.

Tri-state Metasurface-Based Electromagnetic Screen with Switchable Reflection, Transmission, and Absorption Functionalities

Andre de Lustrac et al.

Summary: The proposed electromagnetic screen with switchable functionalities is composed of tunable metasurfaces inserted in a multilayer structure. By electronically controlling the external current applied across the p-i-n diodes in the metasurfaces, the screen can switch between transmission, reflection, or absorption states for incident electromagnetic waves. This composite metascreen enables flexible wavefront control and has potential applications in smart radomes for microwave sensors and antennas.
