Strength Development and Environmental Assessment of Full Tailings Filling Materials with Various Water-to-Binder Ratios

Zhu Ding et al.

Summary: In order to build green mines, goaf is filled, supported, and sealed with a high-water material. This study used three different types of cement as binders for preparing mine backfill materials. The compressive strength development of consolidated tungsten tailings specimens prepared with different binders and water-to-cement ratios was observed and analyzed. The environmental impact of these mine backfill materials was assessed using life cycle analysis, showing that alkali-activated cement has a lower environmental load compared to Portland cement and sulphoaluminate cement.

Review on the Influence and Control of Sulfur-Containing Tailings on the Strength of Cemented Backfill in Metal Mines

Jinxing Wang et al.

Summary: With the vigorous development of the world's mineral resources, the global ecological environment has been severely damaged. Tailings cemented filling technology is an important approach to achieve green and low-carbon development in the mining industry. However, sulfur-containing tailings from metal mines can negatively impact the stability and strength of cemented tailings backfill. This article reviews the influence of sulfur-containing tailings on the strength of cemented backfill, explores the mechanisms behind strength failure caused by these tailings, and proposes three control measures for mitigation.

Sustainable Management of Thickened Tailings in Chile and Peru: A Review of Practical Experience and Socio-Environmental Acceptance

Carlos Cacciuttolo Vargas et al.

Summary: The Thickened Tailings Disposal (TTD) technology allows for the storage of high density mine waste without the need for large slurry tailings storage facilities and dams. The application of TTD in Chile and Peru has shown its effectiveness in reducing negative environmental impacts, such as increasing tailings water recovery, reducing storage footprint, minimizing physical instability risks, and decreasing seepages. TTD is seen as a safe option for mine tailings operations, considering recent dam failures and environmental pollution incidents worldwide.

A floc structure perspective on sediment consolidation in thickened tailings

Michael R. MacIver et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates that aggregate breakage and structural re-organization during mixing in the thickening process can explain some experimentally measured changes in solids volume fraction previously attributed to aggregate densification. The lack of information about the micro-scale mechanisms of flocculated sediment consolidation is highlighted, suggesting potential experimental and theoretical studies to improve the understanding of the situation.
