Extracting seizure frequency from epilepsy clinic notes: a machine reading approach to natural language processing

Kevin Xie et al.

Summary: The study aimed to automatically extract clinical information from unstructured text in clinical notes for epilepsy patients, with the potential to improve clinical decision-making and allow for large-scale retrospective research. Pretrained neural models achieved near-human performance in classifying patients as seizure-free and extracting seizure frequency and date of last seizure after finetuning. This novel machine reading approach opens new possibilities for clinical practice and research.

Note Bloat impacts deep learning-based NLP models for clinical prediction tasks

Jinghui Liu et al.

Summary: The implementation of Electronic Health Records (EHR) has led to the overuse of content-importing technology, resulting in bloated notes with redundant content. This study examines the impact of redundancy on deep learning-based NLP models for clinical prediction tasks. The findings suggest that removing redundancy usually has little negative impact on the model performance and can even improve results in certain cases. Additionally, it is shown that model predictions can be manipulated by adding note duplicates.
