Biocrystal assembly patterns, biopolymer distribution and material property relationships in mytilus galloprovincialis, Bivalvia, and haliotis glabra, Gastropoda, shells

Nicolas J. Peter et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the application of biologically secreted structural materials in various purposes, focusing on the interrelation between mineral microstructure, texture, and organic component fabric of bivalve and gastropod shells. By studying on the micrometer to submicrometer scale, two model organisms living in distinct marine environments constructing their shells with distinct mineral microstructures and biopolymer assemblies were compared. It is found that despite the relatively weak microstructure, fibrous calcite performs well in terms of toughness.

High precipitation rates characterize biomineralization in the benthic foraminifer Ammonia beccarii

Esmee Geerken et al.

Summary: The study investigates the precipitation rate of calcite in benthic foraminifera and finds that it is similar to the maximum reported rates for inorganic calcite precipitation. The results also suggest a conceptual model for foraminiferal calcification involving active ion transport and thermodynamics. Seawater transport may also play a role in the initial stages of calcification.

The architecture of Recent brachiopod shells: diversity of biocrystal and biopolymer assemblages in rhynchonellide, terebratulide, thecideide and craniide shells

Maria Simonet Roda et al.

Summary: Biological hard tissues provide valuable design concepts for advanced materials and offer insights into the evolution of life and its environmental conditions. This review focuses on the mineral and biopolymer organization in Recent brachiopods that produce carbonate shells, highlighting the adaptability of soft and hard tissues to different marine environments. The study utilizes advanced microscopy techniques to examine the structure and assembly of these hard tissues, and discusses the potential of using brachiopod shells as archives for paleoenvironment and paleoclimate reconstructions.

The argonaut constructs its shell via physical self-organization and coordinated cell sensorial activity

Antonio G. Checa et al.

Summary: The shell of the cephalopod Argonauta is composed of complex fibers, with evolution involving cellular activities and substance secretion to form intricate network structures. This evolutionary process involves changes in cross-sectional areas and cellular recognition of patterns, leading to the physical self-organization structure of the shell.

Foraminiferal organic linings: Functional and phylogenetic challenges

Jaroslaw Tyszka et al.

Summary: Foraminifera are commonly used for relative time control and paleo/environmental reconstructions, with their fossil records divided into mineralized shells and organic linings. Analysis of the organic linings suggests a highly fragmentary record with consistent morphological features across almost all specimens, indicating a potential classification pattern.

Calcite crystal orientation patterns in the bilayers of laminated shells of benthic rotaliid foraminifera

X. Yin et al.

Summary: The shells of calcifying foraminifera are important in marine biogeochemical cycles and serve as archives for paleoenvironment reconstruction. There is a lack of consensus on the mineralization mechanisms of foraminiferal shells, which can occur through various methods. This study focuses on deciphering crystallite organization within the shells of benthic foraminifera and highlights their mesocrystalline nature, dendritic-fractal morphologies, and strong interdigitation between crystals.
