Accuracy of ICD-10-CM coding for physical child abuse in a paediatric level I trauma centre

Holly Hughes Garza et al.

Summary: The study found that inpatients had a sensitivity of 55.6% and a specificity of 78.6% for coding child physical abuse using ICD-10-CM, while outpatients had a sensitivity of 22.2% and a specificity of 86.3%. Using ICD-10-CM coded data sets alone for surveillance may significantly underestimate the occurrence of physical child abuse.
