Differences in microbial profile of endometrial fluid and tissue samples in women with in vitro fertilization failure are driven by Lactobacillus abundance

Kreete Lull et al.

Summary: This study assessed the microbial community of endometrial tissue and fluid samples in women undergoing in vitro fertilization treatment, finding that the abundance of Lactobacillus genus influences microbial diversity. The microbiome of women with and without chronic endometritis in IVF patients was similar.

Marking the Profile of the Microflora of the Endometrium and Uterine Cervix in Women as a Potential Factor Determining the Effectiveness of In Vitro Fertilization

Anna Bednarska-Czerwinska et al.

Summary: One promising research trend is evaluating the influence of microbiota in the reproductive system on women's ability to become pregnant and maintain pregnancy. This study aimed to define the microflora profile of the endometrium and uterine cervix in women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF). The results showed that the endometrium is largely colonized by lactic acid bacteria, with Lactobacillus being the most common strain among the physiological microflora. The study also identified pathogenic bacteria, such as those from the Enterobacteriaceae family. However, endometrial dysbiosis was not observed in the patients qualified for IVF.

Genital tract dysbiosis in infertile women with a history of repeated implantation failure and pilot study for reproductive outcomes following oral enteric coating lactoferrin supplementation

Kotaro Kitaya et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate if oral enteric coating lactoferrin supplementation improves reproductive outcomes in infertile women with a history of repeated implantation failure and non-Lactobacillus-dominant microbiota. The results showed that lactoferrin supplementation can improve microbiota imbalance and subsequently increase the success rate of reproduction.

Summary: The study identified specific bacteria in both endometrial and vaginal microbiotas that may be associated with implantation failure. The lower rates of vaginal Lactobacillus in patients with repeated implantation failure could potentially serve as a biomarker for this condition.

Summary: The study found that endometrial scratching in women with one failed IVF/ICSI treatment resulted in 4.6% more live births in the scratch group compared to the control group, with a likely certainty range between -0.7% and +9.9%. Larger studies are needed to further assess the efficacy and clinical implications of endometrial scratching.

Analysing endometrial microbiome: methodological considerations and recommendations for good practice

Nerea M. Molina et al.

Summary: There is increasing evidence that the upper female genital tract is not sterile and has its own microbial communities. However, the role of endometrial microorganisms in reproductive functions is still not fully understood. Studying the endometrial microbiome presents challenges due to the low biomass, requiring well-designed experiments to avoid contamination risks from the lower genital tract. Recommendations for future studies include methodological considerations and good practice guidelines.
