Intake of carbohydrates and SFA and risk of CHD in middle-age adults: the Hordaland Health Study (HUSK)

Teresa R. Haugsgjerd et al.

Summary: The study suggests that increasing intake of high-glycemic carbohydrates and reducing saturated fatty acids, specifically those from cheese, are associated with higher risk of coronary heart disease. Substituting carbohydrates with total fat, but not saturated fatty acids, is significantly linked to lower risk of CHD.

Replacing dietary carbohydrates and refined grains with different alternatives and risk of cardiovascular diseases in a multi-ethnic Asian population

Summary: This study found that in a multi-ethnic Asian population, moderate intake of polyunsaturated fat, replacing refined grains with fruits, vegetables, and dairy, and reducing carbohydrate intake were associated with lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs).

Cholesterol Transport Dysfunction and Its Involvement in Atherogenesis

Anastasia V. Poznyak et al.

Summary: Atherosclerosis is a major cause of serious cardiovascular disorders, and its pathogenesis involves multiple processes. Reverse transport of cholesterol is a mechanism that plays a protective role against atherosclerosis. Disordered cholesterol metabolism can result in dyslipidemia and early atherosclerosis.

Simple Nutrient-Based Rules vs. a Nutritionally Rich Plant-Centered Diet in Prediction of Future Coronary Heart Disease and Stroke: Prospective Observational Study in the US

Yuni Choi et al.

Summary: This study compares the effects of nutrient-based and food-based diets on the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke. The results show that a plant-centered diet and a blood cholesterol-lowering diet are associated with a lower risk of these cardiovascular diseases. The findings support the shift in dietary recommendations for cardiovascular prevention.

Longitudinal association of dietary carbohydrate and the risk cardiovascular disease: a dose-response meta-analysis

Noushin Mohammadifard et al.

Summary: This study found that an increased intake of dietary carbohydrates is associated with a higher risk of CVD events, especially in women, but not with CVD mortality or CHD events. Higher carbohydrate intake is also linked to an increased risk of stroke, with no significant association found in men.

The association of energy and macronutrient intake with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease and dementia: findings from 120 963 women and men in the UK Biobank

Briar L. McKenzie et al.

Summary: This study using data from UK Biobank found that high carbohydrate intake increases the risk of death, while higher protein intake reduces the risk. Moderate intake of energy and protein can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, and moderate energy intake can reduce the risk of dementia. Sex differences were identified, and targeting combinations of macronutrients in dietary policy and interventions may provide the greatest benefits.

Association of carbohydrate and saturated fat intake with cardiovascular disease and mortality in Australian women

Sarah Gribbin et al.

Summary: Moderate carbohydrate intake (41.0%-44.3% of TEI) was associated with the lowest risk of CVD in middle-aged Australian women, without affecting total mortality. Increasing saturated fat intake was not associated with CVD or mortality, but instead correlated with decreased rates of diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.

Is the world converging to a 'Western diet'?

Azzeddine Azzam

Summary: The study found strong evidence of global dietary convergence towards a 'Western diet', driven by income, globalization, and urbanization. However, some countries are transitioning towards unhealthy dietary patterns at a slower pace compared to Western countries, highlighting the need for policy interventions.

Dietary carbohydrate intake and new-onset diabetes: A nationwide cohort study in China

Chun Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found a U-shaped association between the percentage of energy from carbohydrate intake and new-onset diabetes, with the lowest risk at 49-56% of carbohydrate intake. There was an L-shaped association between high-quality carbohydrate intake and new-onset diabetes, and a J-shaped association of low-quality carbohydrate intake with new-onset diabetes. The findings suggest that consuming high-quality carbohydrates and substituting plant-based products for low-quality carbohydrates may help prevent diabetes.

Triglycerides and cardiovascular disease

Oluwayemisi Esan et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown a clear relationship between TG-containing lipoproteins and cardiovascular disease risk, particularly non-HDL-C. Genetic variation studies and intervention trials indicate that reducing TG levels can decrease CVD event rates, and high-dose omega-3 fatty acid formulations may improve CVD outcomes. Further research with newer agents such as pemafibrate and vupanorsen is needed.
