Dietary Characteristics of Elders with Frailty and with Mild Cognitive Impairment: Cross-Sectional Findings and Implications from the Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan 2014-2017

Szu-Yun Wu et al.

Summary: It is unclear whether low dietary intake accompanied with multiple nutrient deficiencies or specific nutrient inadequacy is associated with geriatric syndrome. This study aimed to examine the nutrition inadequacy profiles associated with frailty and cognitive impairment (CI). Total energy intakes were significantly lower with the severity of both frailty and CI. Intake levels of multiple nutrients also decreased with the severity of frailty and CI. Most of the associations between micronutrients and the two geriatric syndromes disappeared after energy adjustment.

Healthy Taiwanese Eating Approach (TEA) toward Total Wellbeing and Healthy Longevity

Wen-Harn Pan et al.

Summary: This review examines dietary patterns in Taiwan and finds that a healthy Taiwanese diet is characterized by high intake of plant-based and aquatic foods, as well as beneficial ethnic foods, drinks, and cooking methods. It also emphasizes the importance of low intake of fast food, fatty and processed meats, sugar, salt, and fried foods. However, the impact of dairy and eggs on health outcomes is inconclusive. Overall, the average Taiwanese diet lacks sufficient vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, and nuts. The findings suggest a mortality-lowering total wellbeing dietary pattern consistent with current knowledge.
