Influence of the nutritional status and oxidative stress in the desaturation and elongation of n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids: Impact on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Luis A. Videla et al.

Summary: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) play essential roles in cell membrane structure and physiological processes. Maintaining an optimal ratio of n-6/n-3 PUFA is crucial for preventing several diseases, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The nutritional status and oxidative stress can affect PUFA biosynthesis and levels.

Appropriateness of indirect markers of muscle damage following lower limbs eccentric-biased exercises: A systematic review with meta-analysis

Emeric Chalchat et al.

Summary: This review aimed to characterize the time-course of exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) markers based on the level of maximal voluntary contraction torque loss at 24-48h post-exercise (MVCloss24-48h), identify factors affecting MVCloss24-48h, and evaluate the appropriateness of EIMD markers as indicators of MVCloss24-48h. The findings suggest that different markers should be used at different time points based on the severity of EIMD, and training status and exercise type/modality can influence MVCloss24-48h. This study provides important insights into the understanding, monitoring, and assessment of muscle damage.

N-3 PUFAs and their specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators on airway inflammatory response: beneficial effects in the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases

Jessica Zuniga-Hernandez et al.

Summary: This article analyzes the influence of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) and their lipid mediators on the inflammatory response in respiratory diseases, emphasizing their beneficial effects in prevention and treatment. Studies show that EPA and DHA can attenuate the pro-inflammatory response in respiratory diseases and reduce related symptoms.

Eicosapentaenoic acid changes muscle transcriptome and intervenes in aging-related fiber type transition in male mice

Hiroki Yamazaki et al.

Summary: This study revealed that the early phenotype of skeletal muscle in aging male mice is characterized by muscle weakness with fast-to-slow fiber type transition, which could be ameliorated by feeding with EPA-enriched diet. EPA induced metabolic changes such as an increase in systemic insulin sensitivity and altered muscle transcriptome in the aging mice. These changes may be related to the fiber type transition and influence muscle quality.

Summary: Resolvin-D2 shows potential as a new therapeutic alternative for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, targeting inflammation and myogenic cells to enhance muscle regeneration. In mouse models, Resolvin-D2 is more effective than glucocorticoids in mitigating muscular dystrophy by dampening inflammation and promoting myogenesis.

Metabolipidomic profiling reveals an age-related deficiency of skeletal muscle pro-resolving mediators that contributes to maladaptive tissue remodeling

James F. Markworth et al.

Summary: Aging impairs the local biosynthesis of specialized pro-resolving mediators in muscle, leading to increased inflammation, inhibited myofiber regeneration, and delayed recovery of muscle function. Immunoresolvents may be promising therapeutics for muscular injuries and associated pain in the elderly, as they improve muscle function recovery without inhibiting tissue regeneration like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Oxylipin profiles and levels vary by skeletal muscle type, dietary fat and sex in young rats

Avery L. Penner et al.

Summary: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)-derived bioactive lipid mediators known as oxylipins have distinct effects on muscle growth, inflammation, and repair in different types of muscles, with sex and diet playing key roles in determining oxylipin levels. Analysis revealed that rat SO muscles had higher levels of oxylipins compared to RG and WG muscles, with n-3 PUFA increasing specific oxylipins and reducing others derived from arachidonic acid. Additionally, sex played a role in the levels of oxylipins in SO and RG muscles, with females showing higher levels.

Summary: Skeletal muscle is primarily composed of myofibers, with their size and muscle mass being influenced by various pathological and physiological conditions. Satellite cells play a crucial role in muscle regeneration, but a reduced number and impaired myogenic function may lead to muscle disorders. The function of satellite cells is affected by mitochondrial function, inflammation, and Omega-3 PUFAs.
