Breakfast consumption and its relationship with diet quality and adherence to Mediterranean diet in European adolescents: the HELENA study

Natalia Gimenez-Legarre et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the associations between breakfast consumption and adherence to diet quality index (DQI) and Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS) in European adolescents. The results showed that breakfast consumers had better dietary quality scores compared to those who usually skipped breakfast. Thus, promoting regular breakfast consumption in adolescents may be an effective strategy to improve overall diet quality.

Universal School Meals and Associations with Student Participation, Attendance, Academic Performance, Diet Quality, Food Security, and Body Mass Index: A Systematic Review

Juliana F. W. Cohen et al.

Summary: The review concluded that universal free school meals have positive associations with students' participation in school meals, diet quality, food security, academic performance, and BMI, but findings regarding attendance and financial implications were mixed. The study also suggested potential protective effects of universal free school meals on student BMI and positive financial outcomes for lower-income school districts participating in the program. Further research on the financial implications of universal free meals is needed.

Breakfast Skipping, Weight, Cardiometabolic Risk, and Nutrition Quality in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled and Intervention Longitudinal Trials

Roberta Ricotti et al.

Summary: Research shows that breakfast skipping increases with age and is associated with a high risk of overweight, obesity, cardiometabolic risk, and unhealthy dietary habits. Interventions in children and adolescents have shown that multi-level approaches can effectively reduce breakfast skipping, while breakfast skippers tend to have higher rates of obesity and lower quality dietary intake.
