Masticatory movements and food textures in older patients with eating difficulties

Yoko Kato et al.

Summary: The study found that masticatory movements in older patients with eating difficulties were associated with oral motor function, physical function, and appropriate food textures, possibly influenced by individual differences in systemic motor control. This highlights the importance of masticatory movements in enjoying eating, on par with the significance of having teeth.

The Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids (TOMASS): Reliability and validity in patients with dysphagia

Francesca Todaro et al.

Summary: The study revealed that TOMASS demonstrated high inter- and intra-rater reliability in clinical patients with dysphagia. Significant differences were found in the number of masticatory cycles, swallows, and total time between the clinical and control groups. Patients with different oral dental statuses showed variations in masticatory cycles and ingestion duration.
