Review on the Diverse Biological Effects of Glabridin

Jianhong Zhang et al.

Summary: Glabridin, a prenylated isoflavan found in Licorice root, has significant impacts on drug development and medicine. It possesses various biological properties, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-tumor, anti-microbial, bone protection, cardiovascular protection, neuroprotection, hepatoprotection, anti-obesity, and anti-diabetes effects. Multiple signaling pathways are involved in the regulatory activities of glabridin. However, its poor water solubility and low bioavailability have limited its clinical applications. Fortunately, several effective strategies have been developed for improvement, such as nanoemulsions, microneedles, and smartPearls formulation.

The Nrf2 Pathway in Liver Diseases

Jiaming Zhou et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress is the leading cause of most liver diseases, and the Keap1-Nrf2 system plays a critical role in defense against oxidative stress. Increasing Nrf2 levels can alleviate liver injury and have protective effects in various liver diseases.

Modulation of the p38 MAPK Pathway by Anisomycin Promotes Ferroptosis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma through Phosphorylation of H3S10

Wei Chen et al.

Summary: Anisomycin, as an agonist of p38 MAPK, induced ferroptosis in HCC cells by promoting H3S10 phosphorylation. The study showed that anisomycin could suppress HCC cell colony formation and migration, while also inducing HCC cell death.

Ethanol Extract of Licorice Alleviates HFD-Induced Liver Fat Accumulation in Association with Modulation of Gut Microbiota and Intestinal Metabolites in Obesity Mice

Fei Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the beneficial effects of licorice ethanol extract (LEE) on hepatic lipid accumulation in obese mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) and the role of gut microbiota in LEE treatment. The results showed that LEE supplementation improved obesity and liver fat accumulation in HFD mice, and also improved intestinal dysbiosis caused by HFD. However, LEE did not exhibit a therapeutic effect in pseudo-sterile mice.

Alcoholic fatty liver disease inhibited the co-expression of Fmo5 and PPARα to activate the NF-κB signaling pathway, thereby reducing liver injury via inducing gut microbiota disturbance

Lingjian Kong et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Fmo5 is closely related to gut microbiota and the PPAR signaling pathway in AFLD. Changes in bacterial phyla and decreased co-expression of Fmo5 and PPAR alpha were observed in AFLD models. The co-expression of Fmo5 and PPAR alpha attenuated AFLD-induced liver injury and inflammatory response by inhibiting the NF-kappa B signaling pathway.
