Summary: This study using Mendelian randomization (MR) methods, found a causal association between genetically increased serum 25OHD levels and reduced risk of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the European population.

Vitamin D Supplementation Practices among Multiple Sclerosis Patients and Professionals

Weronika Galus et al.

Summary: This study assessed the vitamin D status and practices among MS patients and professionals in the clinical setting. Results showed that while most patients confirmed vitamin D supplementation, only a small percentage achieved optimal vitamin D levels. Lack of doctor's recommendation was the most common reason for the absence of supplementation.

Vitamin D supplementation in multiple sclerosis: an expert opinion based on the review of current evidence

Robin Boltjes et al.

Summary: There is currently no solid evidence to support the use of vitamin D therapy in treating MS, although there are promising results in clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) patients and young MS patients early after diagnosis. Further large-scale clinical trials are recommended to investigate the effects of vitamin D supplementation in MS, particularly in selected patient groups such as CIS patients and young patients at the time of diagnosis, aiming to reach a level of 100 nmol/l with vitamin D-3 supplements.

The Effect of Different Administration Time and Dosage of Vitamin D Supplementation in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Xiaofan Yuan et al.

Summary: According to the meta-analysis, different administration time and dosage of vitamin D as an adjuvant treatment did not have a significant therapeutic effect on multiple sclerosis. Further randomized controlled trials are needed to investigate whether longer duration and larger dosage of vitamin D might produce therapeutic effects in patients with MS without serious adverse effects.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effect of vitamin D supplements on multiple sclerosis (MS) patients regarding relapse and disability improvement. The study found that both high- and low-dose vitamin D supplements did not have a significant effect on relapse rate and disability in MS patients during treatment.
