Vitamin B12 in Foods, Food Supplements, and Medicines-A Review of Its Role and Properties with a Focus on Its Stability

Zane Temova Rakusa et al.

Summary: Vitamin B-12, an essential micronutrient, is dependent on dietary sources and is commonly supplemented through food. This article provides an overview of the different forms of B-12 used for supplementation, their biochemical role, bioavailability, and efficacy in various dosage forms. It also discusses the stability of these forms under different environmental factors and their quality in products on the market. The article further explores approaches to stabilize B-12, including minimizing destabilizing factors, adding stabilizers, or using innovative technological processes.

Evaluation of thiol disulfide balance in adolescents with vitamin B12 deficiency

Mehmet Semih Demirtas et al.

Summary: This study explores the association between vitamin B12 deficiency and dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis in adolescent patients. The study consists of 45 adolescent patients with vitamin B12 deficiency and a control group of 45 healthy adolescents. The results show that vitamin B12 level is significantly lower in the deficiency group, and oxidative stress may play a vital role in vitamin B12 deficiency in adolescence.

Vitamin B12 Reduces TDP-43 Toxicity by Alleviating Oxidative Stress and Mitochondrial Dysfunction

Yu-Mi Jeon et al.

Summary: TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) plays a role in RNA metabolic processes and its cytoplasmic aggregation is associated with neurodegenerative diseases. Hydroxocobalamin (Hb) treatment attenuated TDP-43-induced neurotoxicity by reducing oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. Similarly, dietary treatment with Hb improved lifespan and motility defects in TDP-43-expressing fruit flies. These findings suggest that Hb may be a potential therapeutic intervention for TDP-43-associated proteinopathies.

Summary: This study evaluated the relationships between Hcy levels and clinical features in first-episode, Chinese Han, drug-naive patients with schizophrenia. The results showed that individuals with schizophrenia had higher Hcy levels compared to healthy controls, and Hcy levels were positively correlated with severity of clinical symptoms. Furthermore, male individuals had significantly higher Hcy levels than females.

Summary: Vitamin B-12 is an essential cofactor in two metabolic pathways and is primarily obtained from animal-based foods. Deficiency in B-12 can mimic various illnesses and requires attention from different medical specialists for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Current tests and treatment options for B-12 deficiency have limitations that need to be addressed for better assessment and management.
