Interaction between the PNPLA3 Gene and Nutritional Factors on NAFLD Development: The Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study

Sooyeon Oh et al.

Summary: Genetic and nutritional factors contribute to the development of NAFLD, with the PNPLA3 genotype interacting differently with various nutrients. High intake of protein, fat, sodium, phosphorus, niacin, and vitamin B6 is associated with a decreased risk of NAFLD in the PNPLA3 risk allele group, while only high fat intake is associated with decreased risk in the non-risk allele group. Among these nutrients, high sodium intake and kimchi, a fermented vegetable dish, have a significant protective effect against NAFLD in individuals with the PNPLA3 genotype.

Effect of Mediterranean diet on liver enzymes: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

Abbas Ali Sangouni et al.

Summary: This study reviewed RCT on the effect of Mediterranean diet on liver enzymes and found that it significantly reduced AST and GGT, but had no significant effect on ALT. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the overall effects were significantly influenced by some studies, suggesting a need for further research.

Management of Dyslipidemia in Patients with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Anna Martin et al.

Summary: This article reviews the pathogenic relationship between NAFLD and dyslipidemia, emphasizing the importance of early detection and adequate treatment. A stepwise approach for dyslipidemic patients with NAFLD is recommended, including characterization, risk stratification, treatment targets, lifestyle modification, and pharmacotherapy.

The effectiveness and acceptability of Mediterranean diet and calorie restriction in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): A systematic review and meta-analysis

Laura Haigh et al.

Summary: This study synthesized data from randomized and clinical controlled trials to explore the effects of Mediterranean Diet and Calorie Restriction interventions on surrogate markers of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in adults. The results showed that these dietary interventions reduced liver function markers and had positive effects on liver steatosis and stiffness. There was a dose-response relationship between the degree of calorie restriction and improvements in liver function and weight loss.

Nutrigenomics and Nutrigenetics in Metabolic- (Dysfunction) Associated Fatty Liver Disease: Novel Insights and Future Perspectives

Marcello Dallio et al.

Summary: MAFLD, a prevalent hepatopathy worldwide, is associated with metabolic syndrome and influenced by genetic, environmental, and nutritional factors. Nutrition can influence patients' clinical outcome by acting on individual genetic background and modifying specific epigenetic expression. The interplay between diet, genetics, and immunity is a promising research field for the future in understanding MAFLD.
