Oxidative Stress in Brain in Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment

D. Allan Butterfield

Summary: Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is the earliest clinical stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD), characterized by normal activities of daily living but with memory issues and no dementia. Oxidative stress is prominent even in this early state of MCI, leading to damaged key proteins and lipids, which may account for neuronal loss. Potential therapeutic strategies to slow progression to AD are discussed.

Review on the roles of specific cell-derived exosomes in Alzheimer's disease

Yutong Zou et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of death worldwide with no effective cure or prevention. Exosomes, membrane-bound extracellular vesicles produced in eukaryotic cells, play important roles in the development, diagnosis, and treatment of AD, although their specific functions are still unclear. With advancements in exosome extraction, isolation, and characterization, studies have focused on exosomes derived from different cells and body fluids.

Ingestion of Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) during adolescence causes depressive-like behaviors through hypoactive glutamatergic signaling in the medial prefrontal cortex

Jae Soon Kang et al.

Summary: The study found that DEHP ingestion resulted in depressive-like behaviors in mice and evoked chronic stress responses, causing an imbalance in glutamatergic signaling in the brain.

Plasma Levels of Neuron- and Astrocyte-Derived Exosomal Amyloid Beta1-42, Amyloid Beta1-40, and Phosphorylated Tau Levels in Schizophrenia Patients and Non-psychiatric Comparison Subjects: Relationships With Cognitive Functioning and Psychopathology

Ellen E. Lee et al.

Summary: The study found that exosomal markers may provide novel insights into brain-based processes in people with schizophrenia. Differentiating between diagnostic groups, astrocyte-derived A beta marker levels were sensitive and specific. Higher levels of ADE-P-T181-tau were associated with worse executive functioning.
