Classification of salivary bacteriome in asymptomatic COVID-19 cases based on long-read nanopore sequencing

Rungrat Jitvaropas et al.

Summary: The global pandemic of COVID-19 has affected the health of almost everyone, including changes in salivary microbiota. This study investigated and compared the salivary microbiota and co-infectious bacterial pathogens in asymptomatic COVID-19-positive and negative individuals. The results suggested that Lautropia mirabilis may be a co-infectious agent in the asymptomatic COVID-19 group.

Brief overview of dietary intake, some types of gut microbiota, metabolic markers and research opportunities in sample of Egyptian women

Nayera E. Hassan et al.

Summary: Metabolic syndrome is a phenotype caused by the interaction of intrinsic and extrinsic factors. This study found that obese women with MetS had the highest values of anthropometric and biochemical parameters. These women consumed a diet high in calories, protein, fat, and carbohydrate, and low in fiber and micronutrients. The Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio correlated with cholesterol, LDL-C, and SCFA among obese women with MetS, suggesting a potential role of dysbiosis and metabolic products in metabolic defects.

Prevalence and factors associated with overweight and obesity in selected health areas in a rural health district in Cameroon: a cross-sectional analysis

Larissa Pone Simo et al.

Summary: The study found a high prevalence of overweight and obesity in the selected health areas in West Cameroon. Females, married individuals, and those with higher levels of education had higher odds of overweight and obesity. Community-based interventions targeting these groups should be considered to control overweight and obesity.

Is Probiotic Supplementation Useful for the Management of Body Weight and Other Anthropometric Measures in Adults Affected by Overweight and Obesity with Metabolic Related Diseases? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Simone Perna et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis study found that probiotic supplementation can significantly reduce BMI, waist circumference, and hip circumference in overweight and obese patients, but the effect on body weight is not significant. Although there is a positive trend, further research is needed before recommending probiotics as a therapeutic strategy for these patients.

Metabolic syndrome and synbiotic targeting of the gut microbiome

Maria A. Nunez-Sanchez et al.

Summary: Metabolic syndrome, a global epidemic caused by poor dietary habits, involves complex metabolic disorders including alterations in gut microbiome. Non-pharmacological approaches, such as synbiotics, are being explored due to high costs associated with long-term management, yet high-quality interventional clinical trials are scarce. This review evaluates the effects of synbiotics on different metabolic manifestations of MetS in human subjects.

Synbiotic Supplementation Improves Obesity Index and Metabolic Biomarkers in Thai Obese Adults: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Chaiyavat Chaiyasut et al.

Summary: The cluster of metabolic disorders such as obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and glucose intolerance increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Research suggests a crucial role of microbiota in human health and disease, influencing digestion, energy and glucose metabolism, immunomodulation, and brain function. Supplementation of synbiotics significantly alters obesity-associated biomarkers, opening avenues for further studies to explore their potential in managing obesity-related health issues.

Comparison of Nutrient Intake in Lao PDR by the Korean CAN-Pro and Thailand INMUCAL Analysis Programs

Yeseung Jeong et al.

Summary: A study compared nutrition status data calculated by two different analysts using analysis programs from different countries. While there were some differences in nutrient intake calculated by different programs in Laos, the average nutrient intake calculated by different analysts using one program showed no significant differences. Developing an appropriate nutritional analysis program reflecting the diet behavior and food culture in Laos is necessary to understand Laotian nutritional status.
