Effect of Low-Pressure Plasma Treatment on the Surface Wettability of Poly(butylene succinate) Films

Espedito Vassallo et al.

Summary: Poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) films were processed by radio frequency (RF; 13.56 MHz) low-pressure plasma to improve their wettability and oxygen barrier properties. The plasma treatment resulted in surface functionalization that could be applied practically, such as the deposition of SiOx onto PBS surfaces.

Molecular Recognition of Proteins through Quantitative Force Maps at Single Molecule Level

Carlos Marcuello et al.

Summary: Intermittent jumping force is an atomic force microscopy mode that provides simultaneous topography and maximum-adhesion images based on force spectroscopy. By scanning in a repulsive regime and applying very low forces, unspecific tip-sample forces can be avoided. This mode allows for qualitative and quantitative molecular recognition maps obtained at reasonably fast rates, which is advantageous for discriminating between similar protein molecules.

About Hydrophobicity of Lignin: A Review of Selected Chemical Methods for Lignin Valorisation in Biopolymer Production

Anton Lisy et al.

Summary: Lignin, as the second most abundant renewable natural polymer on Earth, has great potential in industrial applications but is hindered by its high heterogeneity. Selective modifications of structure and functional groups can improve material properties, while separation of different qualitative lignin groups allows for selective application in industry.

Interfacial and mechanical characterisation of biodegradable polymer-flax fibre composites

Delphin Pantaloni et al.

Summary: The study suggests that replacing glass fibers with flax fibers in thermoset composite materials can reduce ecological impact, and using a biodegradable thermoplastic matrix enables recycling and composting. Investigating the interface between flax fibers and biodegradable matrices reveals that their mechanical properties may be comparable to or better than traditional benchmarks. The adhesion between fibers and matrices plays a significant role in the performance of biocomposites.

Preparation and foaming behavior of poly (lactic acid)/poly (butylene succinate)/cellulose fiber composite for hot cups packaging application

Suwara Vorawongsagul et al.

Summary: The research investigated the effects of cellulose fiber addition on the properties of PLA/PBS/CF composite materials, showing that the addition of cellulose fiber can enhance the strength and thermal resistance of the composites. As the amount of cellulose fiber increased, the tensile strength, tensile modulus, and percentage of elongation at break also increased.

Tuning the functional properties of lignocellulosic films by controlling the molecular and supramolecular structure of lignin

E. Gerbin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationships between lignin molecular and supramolecular structures and their functional properties within cellulose-based solid matrix, used as a model biodegradable polymer carrier. The results show the possibility to tune the performances of these composites by exploiting lignin multi-scale structure. Phenol-enriched oligomers were the compounds most likely to interact with cellulose, leading to the smoothest film surface and highest radical scavenging capacity.

Mario Ivan Penas et al.

Summary: In this study, multiphasic thin films containing PCL, PBS, and PBS-ran-PCL were prepared and characterized using various techniques, showing variations in component composition and complex morphologies. The films obtained were semicrystalline, with a dominant component morphology and traces of other components revealed by s-SNOM/nano-FTIR.

Investigations by AFM of Ageing Mechanisms in PLA-Flax Fibre Composites during Garden Composting

Alessia Melelli et al.

Summary: PLA-flax non-woven composites show preferential degradation of flax fibres from the edge to the core during garden composting, while erosion of cell walls occurs within the fibres themselves from the central lumen to the periphery primary wall. The ageing process results in a decrease in indentation modulus for fibres in the preserved core of the composite and a change in PLA morphology towards the edge of the sample.

A Novel Network-Structured Compatibilizer for Improving the Interfacial Behavior of PBS/Lignin

Xin Zhou et al.

Summary: A green poly(butylene succinate) (PBS)-lignin gel compatibilizer with a novel network structure was synthesized successfully for the first time via dicumyl peroxide (DCP) initiating free radical grafting of PBS and lignin during melt extrusion. The mechanical properties of the gel compatibilizer were greatly affected by the concentration of DCP, leading to improvements in the elongation at break and tensile strength of the resulting alloys. The study demonstrated enhanced compatibility and mechanical properties in lignin-based biodegradable materials using the gel compatibilizer.

Summary: Over the past three decades, key technological improvements have transformed AFM into a nanoscopic laboratory for directly observing and chemically characterizing molecular and cell biological systems under physiological conditions. By customizing nanoscopic chemical laboratories and utilizing different AFM modes, it is possible to chemically image, sense, and manipulate biosystems at extremely small spatial and temporal resolutions. The combination of AFM with optical microscopy and spectroscopy shows great potential in addressing the complexity of biological systems and tackling fundamental challenges in life sciences.
