Synergistic effect of tung oil and heat treatment on surface characteristics and dimensional stability of wood

Luxi He et al.

Summary: This study uses a synergistic method of tung oil impregnation and heat treatment to improve the properties of wood. The results showed that both heat treatment and tung oil impregnation contribute to reducing moisture absorption and dimensional instability of wood. The impregnated tung oil occupies water passages, significantly reduces the porosity and permeability of wood, provides a better hydrophobic surface, prevents water absorption, and improves dimensional stability. Therefore, the combination of tung oil and heat treatment offers an effective and environmentally friendly method with great prospects for the future.

Tung oil-based coatings towards sustainable paper packaging materials

Fabio M. Silva et al.

Summary: Nowadays, there is a high dependence on synthetic plastic-based materials for packaging which raises environmental and health concerns. This study introduces a bio-based coating formulation using tung oil and Darocur 1173 as a photoinitiator to develop functional paper with improved water resistance properties without affecting other qualities. The coated papers showed significant enhancement in hydrophobicity and water absorption was reduced with a curing time of only 15 seconds. These results demonstrate the potential of tung oil photo-polymerizable coating formulations as a sustainable alternative for functional paper packaging materials.

Sustainable biocarbon/tung oil coatings with hydrophobic and UV-shielding properties for outdoor wood substrates

Laetitia Marrot et al.

Summary: With the increasing interest in wood as a construction material, sustainable coatings containing biocarbon were developed to protect the wood from discoloration and loss of mechanical properties. The addition of biocarbon enhanced color stability and hydrophobicity of the coatings, but the increase in biocarbon content did not further improve water repellence. However, the introduction of 20% biocarbon best protected the decrease in water repellence caused by weathering.

Comparing amorphous silica, short-range-ordered silicates and silicic acid species by FTIR

Ruth Ellerbrock et al.

Summary: There is increasing interest in the terrestrial silicon cycle due to its implications for ecosystem performance. The current analytical methods are limited, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis is suggested as a promising tool for differentiation. We conducted FTIR analyses on various silicon species and found that peak broadening and shifts in the Si-O-Si absorption band can indicate changes in internal order and incorporation of larger ions. Short-range ordered aluminosilicates (SROAS) can be distinguished from pure amorphous Si species using specific IR absorption bands.

Water vapor sorption and permeability of sustainable alginate/collagen/SiO2 composite films

Luis Marangoni Junior et al.

Summary: Research on blend films of sodium alginate (SA) and hydrolyzed collagen (HC) containing SiO2 nanoparticles showed that concentrations higher than 6% led to significant reductions in film water content and WVP. The moisture sorption behavior exhibited a type III isotherm, indicating reduced interactions with water vapor at low water activity. These findings suggest that SA/HC/SiO2 composite films could be a simple, economical, and sustainable alternative for packaging with reduced water sensitivity.
