Emerging green technologies for recovery and reuse of spent lithium-ion batteries - a review

Ronghao Wang et al.

Summary: The pursuit of sustainable energy and storage technologies, driven by growing global energy demand and environmental damage, has become increasingly important. Battery recycling should be considered in the development of battery systems due to the resource consumption in mass production of batteries. In this article, we systematically outline the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) from a sustainable perspective. We provide detailed information on state-of-the-art recycling mechanisms, industrial technologies, and emerging green recycling technologies. We also propose an evaluation system to assess the environmental indicators of different recycling methods. Furthermore, we discuss the prospects and direction of waste lithium recycling based on comparative analysis of existing technologies, as well as the challenges and opportunities of battery recycling in the future.
