An extraordinary-performance gradient nanostructured Hadfield manganese steel containing multi-phase nanocrystalline-amorphous core-shell surface layer by laser surface processing

Wanting Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, a laser surface remelting technique was used to fabricate a heterogeneous gradient nanostructured layer on an austenitic Hadfield manganese steel. The layer exhibited a gradient refinement process and had a core-shell structure with ultra-strong mechanical properties due to the extra work hardening ability induced by the strength-ductility synergy in the gradient nanostructure.

Carbide-facilitated nanocrystallization of martensitic laths and carbide deformation in AISI 420 stainless steel during laser shock peening

Changyu Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the surface microstructure of AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel was modified using laser shock peening (LSP) technique, and the deformation mechanisms were investigated through observing microstructural evolution. The results showed that laser shock wave caused severe deformation in the original sub micron carbide, leading to carbide fragmentation and promoting nanocrystallization of martensitic laths. Additionally, carbide decomposition occurred simultaneously with severe plastic deformation, and this, along with fine grain strengthening, precipitation strengthening, and dislocation strengthening induced by LSP, contributed to an increase in the strength and ductility of AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel.

Enhancing strength and ductility via crystalline-amorphous nanoarchitectures in TiZr-based alloys

Kaisheng Ming et al.

Summary: Crystalline-amorphous composites have the potential to achieve high strength and high ductility. Researchers fabricate a TiZr-based alloy with micrometer-size equiaxed grains that are made up of three-dimensional bicontinuous crystalline-amorphous nanoarchitectures. In situ tension and compression tests reveal enhanced ductility and strain hardening capability, providing ultra-high yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and large uniform ductility to the alloy. Experiments combined with simulations reveal the synergetic deformation mechanisms, resulting in an effective combination of strength, ductility, and strain hardening.

The Strain Rate Sensitivity of Heterogeneous Thin Film Metallic Glasses: Interplay Between Nanoscale Heterogeneity and Dynamic Plasticity

Yucong Gu et al.

Summary: The influence of nanoscale structural heterogeneity of metallic glasses (MGs) on dynamic plasticity, such as strain rate sensitivity and deformation mechanisms, has been investigated in this study using combined experimental and simulation approaches. The transition in strain rate sensitivity for a MG with higher heterogeneity was found as the indentation rate increased. Simulation results were able to capture the experimental trend, showing that the change in deformation mechanisms from structure-dictated strain localization to stress-dictated strain percolation contributes to the observed strain rate sensitivity transition. The study provides insights into the structure-property relationship of MGs on the nanoscale and facilitates the design of heterogeneous MGs for dynamic applications.

Deformation behavior of crystalline/amorphous Al-Si nanocomposites with nanolaminate or nanofibrous microstructures

Bibhu Prasad Sahu et al.

Summary: Deformation mechanisms in sputter-deposited crystalline Al/amorphous Si nanocomposites with nanolaminate or nanofibrous morphology were characterized using nanoindentation, micropillar compression testing, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results revealed that the nanofibrous composite exhibited strain hardening with no shear band formation, while the nanolaminate composite exhibited catastrophic shear bands. The presence of stacking faults and twin boundaries in the Al nanofibers and the absence of microshear bands in the nanofibrous composite indicated plastic deformation in the amorphous Si phase and crystalline Al nanofibers. Molecular dynamics simulations further supported the influence of Al solute concentration on the flow strength of amorphous Si. These findings are important for the design and fabrication of nanocomposites with specific structures and properties.

High temperature indentation creep mechanisms of metal-ceramic nanolaminates

Summary: In this study, the creep behaviors of Al/SiC nanolaminates with different layer thicknesses were investigated under varying temperatures using nanoindentation. Different creep mechanisms were observed for nanolaminates with 10 nm and 100 nm layer thicknesses, which were attributed to the co-deformation of Al and SiC layers beneath the indenter. These findings were further supported by detailed transmission electron microscopic observation, activation energy, and activation volume analysis.

Machine learning based surrogate modeling approach for mapping crystal deformation in three dimensions

Anup Pandey et al.

Summary: The machine learning based surrogate modeling method presented in this study can predict the spatially resolved 3D crystal orientation evolution of polycrystalline materials under uniaxial tensile loading. It is significantly faster than existing crystal plasticity methods and enables simulation of large volumes that would be otherwise computationally prohibitive. This approach surpasses existing ML-based modeling results by providing local 3D full-field predictions rather than just average values or being limited to 2D structures.
