Study of Bond Formation in Ceramic and Composite Materials Ultrasonically Soldered with Bi-Ag-Mg-Type Solder

Roman Kolenak et al.

Summary: The study investigated a Bi-Ag-Mg soldering alloy and analyzed the direct soldering of Al2O3 ceramics and Ni-SiC composites. The Bi11Ag1Mg solder exhibited a wide melting interval determined by the silver and magnesium content, with melting starting at 264 degrees C and complete fusion achieved at 380 degrees C. The microstructure of the solder comprised a bismuth matrix with segregated silver crystals and an Ag (Mg, Bi) phase. The average tensile strength of the solder was measured at 26.7 MPa. The joint between Al2O3 and Bi11Ag1Mg was formed through the reaction of magnesium, resulting in a high-Mg reaction layer of approximately 2 mu m. The Bi11Ag1Mg/Ni-SiC joint was formed due to the high silver content, and the boundary also contained significant amounts of Bi and Ni, indicating the presence of a NiBi3 phase. The average shear strength of the combined Al2O3/Ni-SiC joint with Bi11Ag1Mg solder was 27 MPa.

In Vitro Corrosion Behavior of Zn3Mg0.7Y Biodegradable Alloy in Simulated Body Fluid (SBF)

Catalin Panaghie et al.

Summary: Biodegradable metallic materials, particularly those based on zinc, have advantages for medical applications due to their degradation rate matching the healing period and the potential for improved mechanical properties by alloying with magnesium and yttrium. This study analyzed the electrochemical and mechanical behavior of a new Zn-based alloy compared to pure Zn and Zn-Mg materials. The addition of Mg and Y improved the mechanical properties of Zn, and the alloys showed active behavior and moderate degradation in simulated body fluid, making them promising biodegradable materials for orthopedic applications.

Ultrafast ultrasonic-assisted transient liquid bonding Al/Mg in air

Zhengwei Li et al.

Summary: In this study, ultrasonic-assisted transient liquid bonding (UATLP) was used to join dissimilar Al/Mg alloys with a pure Zn interlayer in the air to prevent the formation of Al-Mg intermetallic compounds (IMCs). The effects of bonding temperature, ultrasonic power, sonotrode pressure, and interlayer thickness on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the bonded joints were investigated. It was found that the addition of a Zn interlayer effectively suppressed the formation of Al-Mg IMCs. The study also revealed that high ultrasonic power, large sonotrode pressure, and thin Zn interlayer could reduce the thickness of MgZn2.

Characterization of Soldering Alloy Type Bi-Ag-Ti and the Study of Ultrasonic Soldering of Silicon and Copper

Roman Kolenak et al.

Summary: The research focused on characterizing the Bi-Ag-Ti solder alloy and studying its direct soldering properties with silicon and copper. The study found that the solder has a broad melting interval and a microstructure consisting of a bismuth matrix with silver crystals and titanium phases segregated in the matrix. The interaction between the solder and silicon, as well as the copper substrate, was also investigated, with the average shear strength of joints using Bi11Ag1.5Ti solder reported to be 43 MPa.
